On Allowing Support, Tools, and Nervous-System-Safe Creativity

There’s a myth that follows writers into the woods.

A myth we inherit from school, from capitalism, from trauma, from every story we’ve heard about tortured geniuses and starving artists.

The myth goes like this:

ā€œIf you’re not suffering, you’re not creating anything real.ā€

I used to believe that myth with my whole chest… even when I didn’t realize I believed it.

I believed writing had to hurt.
That exhaustion meant I was working hard enough.
That burnout meant I cared deeply enough.
That self-neglect was noble.
That making things easier was somehow cheating.

I believed I had to fight my brain, battle my body, and drag myself through every task like a lone wolf that didn’t need a pack.

But lately — especially as my home grows gentler, as my tools support me, as my nervous system begins to trust softness again — I’m realizing something wild:

Ease isn’t the enemy of art.
Self-abandonment is.
