The Sacred Compass: Write Your Dream Day
Iâm doing something different this weekâIâm making this weekâs posts that are normally reserved for just the den-mates (subscribers) public. Why? Because since becoming an author, part of my dream has always been to help other authorsâthatâs why I created this Substack in the first place. So, welcome, take a peek inside the DenâŚ
Thereâs a truth I (re)stumbled into this week while reflecting on my dadâs birthday:
I already have most of the âdream author lifeâ I once only imagined.
And the rest? Itâs not about if â itâs about when.
That realization landed like a feather and a thunderclap all at onceâeven though itâs something Iâve rationally known for some time.
But, for years I thought peace would come only when I finally had it all: the house, the land, the car, the thriving book royalties, the perfect partner.
But peace didnât wait for the full checklist. Peace arrived when I noticed:
⨠I can already write stories.
⨠I (mostly) own my schedule.
⨠Iâve reclaimed my sanctuary.
⨠Iâve rebuilt my voice and my creative joy.
So much of the dream was already here.
And that got me thinking: maybe one of the most powerful things we can do as writers is to pause and write our dreams not as some distant âsomeday,â but as a story we can step into now.
đŞ The Ritual of Writing Your Dream Day
This is a practice I believe every author should do at least once a year â a ritual compass that points you toward your truest creative life.
(and yes, I do for myself at least annually)
Itâs not âmanifesting.â Itâs not a vision board glued together with magazine scraps.
Itâs story.
Itâs map-making.
Itâs author alchemy.
Because once you are crystal-clear on your destinationâbacktracking the roads to your starting point where you are now, is a simple matter.
âď¸ Step One: Set the Scene
Give yourself an hour. Or three! Give yourself all the time you need for this one.
Make it sacred.
Light a candle, pour a cup of coffee or tea, and open a fresh page in your journal or a clean doc on your laptop.
This isnât a to-do list. This is a spell. A doorway. A dream youâll walk into.
âď¸ Step Two: Write Your Ideal Average Day
Not the lottery fantasy.
Not the âIâm on vacation in Baliâ version.
Not the Instagram highlight reel.
Your average day as your dream author self.
Start with waking up:
Where are you?
What does your home look and feel like?
Whatâs the first thing you see, smell, hear, touch?
Then move through the whole day:
Morning rituals.
Writing sessions.
Meals, movement, self-care.
The kind of work you do, the conversations you have, the rhythms of your hours.
The energy of your space â what surrounds you, supports you, soothes you.
All the way until your head hits the pillow that night.
Make it sensory. Immersive. Tangible.
Write it as a short story â one where you are both the author and the main character.
And no one else ever has to read it if you donât wantâso donât censor yourselfâwrite the big author dream life youâve daydreamed about⌠not the ârealisticâ version youâve maybe shared with others.
âď¸ Step Three: Reverse Engineer the Map
Once youâve written it, reread your Dream Day and highlight 3â5 elements that feel the most alive.
Then ask yourself:
Which pieces are already here, alive in my current life?
Which ones can I bring into my reality now, even in small ways?
Which ones are still future chapters â and what tiny steps could lead me closer?
Maybe your Dream Day includes coffee on a sunlit porch with fresh flowers nearby.
You may not have the porch yet â but you can buy a single bouquet and place it where you write this week. Or, you can even do what I did, I bought an artificial âbouquetâ of one of my favorites: a few branches of a bright yellow forsythia bush. It cost me $10 almost a decade ago, and it still sits on my desk (and only a little worse for wear due to my rambunctious kitties lol)
Maybe your Dream Day includes writing 2,000 words before lunch.
You may not hit that every day â but you can commit to a daily 20-minute session and start stacking bricks toward it.
Maybe your Dream Day includes waking up slowly, having that sacred slow time in the mornings before the day gets moving.
If thatâs not feasible in your current schedule/life â then start waking up even just 30 minutes earlier and make that your slow-wakeup-morning. Donât fill it with anything but what your slow-wakeup looks like. Maybe itâs coffee on the porch by yourself as the sun starts to brighten the day. Maybe itâs just stretching under thick fluffy blankets and petting the cat thatâs confused as to why youâre awake earlier than usual (not that I would know that one first hand⌠LOL)
đž Why This Matters
When you know the destination, you can map the path.
Without clarity, the dream stays vague and unreachable.
With clarity, you realize: some of it is already here, some of it can be honored now, and the rest is waiting patiently for you to arrive.
Without clarity, itâs easy to procrastinate the things that will actually move the needle because they are so vague and unreachable.
With clarity, you will feel energized, motivated, and pulled toward what you now know is an âinevitableâânot a âmaybe somedayâ.
Itâs not about clawing for survival.
Itâs not about punishing yourself with productivity.
Itâs about walking with steady paws toward the life youâre already half living.
đ Todayâs Rewilding Prompt
Write your Dream Day. Make it vivid. Make it immersive.
Then choose one piece of that Dream Day to honor this week in real time.
It doesnât matter how small.
The bouquet. The 20 minutes. The ritual cup of tea.
Every time you honor a piece of your Dream Day now, you collapse the distance between the life you dream and the life you live.
⨠Closing Reflection
As I sat with my dadâs memory this week, I found myself wondering what his dream day would have looked like. What he longed for. What pieces of his life he never got to hold.
I may never know.
But I know mine.
And the greatest gift I can give â to myself, to my son, to the generations before and after me â is to write it down and then step into it, one brick at a time.
So today, I write my Dream Day.
And tomorrow, I live one piece of it.
With ink-stained paws and a sacred compass,
~ Stacy
