Seven of Cups — When Everything Feels Like Too Much at Once
I pulled this card this morning and just... sat with it for a minute.
Because honestly? I didn’t want to write today.
I didn’t want to do much of anything today. And I think that’s exactly why this card showed up.
The Seven of Cups is the card of the overwhelmed soul standing in front of a cloud full of visions — each one demanding attention, each one radiating its own particular flavor of urgency or longing or fear. Some of those cups hold beautiful things. Some hold illusions.
Some hold very real problems dressed up in anxiety’s clothing so that everything feels equally enormous at 8am.
And the figure in the card? They’re just... standing there. A little frozen. A little lost in the fog.
Yeah. Hi. That’s me today. 👋🏼
🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers
The Seven of Cups has a particular message for creative people, and it’s one I don’t see talked about enough:
Too many possibilities can be just as paralyzing as none at all.
You know this feeling if you’ve ever sat down to write and found yourself unable to start because there were seventeen directions the scene could go. Or you’ve got four books whispering at you simultaneously and you can’t choose which one deserves today. Or you open a blank document and suddenly every idea you’ve ever had evaporates into a fog of “but what if I’m choosing wrong.”
That’s the Seven of Cups. That’s the cloud of visions. That’s the creative overwhelm that masquerades as laziness or block or not being “a real writer” — when really, you’re just standing in front of too many cups with no map for which one to drink from.
Here’s what I’ve learned about this card — and about this feeling:
You cannot think your way out of the Seven of Cups.
You can only choose your way out of it.
Not the perfect choice. Not the right choice. Just... a choice. One cup. Pick it up. Start there.
Because here’s the thing the card doesn’t show you: the figure doesn’t have to drink from all seven. They never did. The cloud will keep floating its visions whether you engage with every single one or not. Your only job is to choose the one cup that is actually, genuinely, yours — right now, today, with the energy you actually have — and let the rest stay in the fog a little longer.
🔥 The Seven of Cups asks writers:
Where are you standing frozen in front of too many possibilities right now?
Which of those cups is the one that’s actually calling you — not the loudest one, not the most urgent-feeling one, but the one that feels most true?
What would it look like to choose just that one thing today — even imperfectly, even slowly, even if it’s just one paragraph — and let everything else stay in the cloud?
The fog isn’t your enemy. It’s just where unborn things live while they’re waiting their turn.
Your job today isn’t to clear the fog. It’s just to choose one cup. 🐾
Today’s Practical Magick:
When the overwhelm hits and the cups are all clamoring at once, try this before you open your document or pick up your pen:
Put one hand on your chest. Take one slow breath. Ask yourself out loud — yes, out loud, it matters — “What is the one thing that is actually mine today?”
Not forever. Just today.
Then write that thing. Just that thing. Even if it’s messy. Even if it’s small.
One cup. That’s the whole assignment. 🌑
