On returning to the simple sweetness you started with — and why the joy you give away is the joy that comes back doubled.

🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers

The Six of Cups is not a striving card. There’s no struggle in it, no swords, no burden being hauled uphill. There’s a big bear in a soft purple robe, sitting in the grass among pink wildflowers, holding up a golden cup. And from that cup rises a heart — a swirl of luminous pink light, lifting up and up into a sky full of stars. A small cub sits at the elder bear’s knee, reaching up with its own little cup, eyes full of trust and wonder. There are six cups in all, scattered like treasure that was never locked away.

It is the card of the beginning. The before. The why.

And it shows up for writers at a very particular moment: not when the deadline looms, not when the launch is breathing down your neck — but in the quiet, when something tugs your sleeve and reminds you that once, before any of this was a business, you wrote because it was fun. Because a story felt like magic. Because making something out of nothing was the closest thing to a spell you knew.

The joy you give away is the joy that rises.

Here’s what the Six of Cups knows about the creative life:

Somewhere along the way, most of us trade the cup of wonder for the ledger of metrics. We start measuring the writing instead of tasting it. We forget that the well doesn’t open through grinding — it opens through sweetness, through safety, through play. A fed writer ships more. A delighted writer ships from a deeper place entirely.

And notice what the elder bear is doing in this card. They aren’t drinking alone. They’re holding the cup up, offering it, sharing the light — and the heart only rises because it’s being given. The little cub mirrors it back with a cup of their own. That’s the secret tucked into this card: the sweetness multiplies in the sharing. The serial chapter you give your readers. The world you build and invite them into. The honest little piece of your own heart you tuck between the lines.

The Six of Cups puts a gentle paw on your arm and says: remember why you started, love. Go back and drink from that cup. There’s still light in it.

  • Where in your creative life have you stopped tasting the work and started only measuring it?

  • What did writing feel like before it had to “perform” — and can you give yourself ten minutes of that today, free of charge?

  • Who is the reader-cub reaching up for the cup you’re holding — and what would it feel like to pour for them with pure delight instead of pressure?

🌿 Today’s Practical Magick

The next time the work starts to feel like a chore — like one more task on the pile — try this before you push through:

Put one hand over your heart. Picture the cup in your own paws. And ask yourself one tiny question: What would make this fun again, just for the next ten minutes? Then do that one small sweet thing — reread a chapter you love, scribble a scene with no stakes, write the part that makes you grin.

That’s it. That’s the spell. The heart rises when you stop forcing and start savoring. 🐾💗
