The Lovers â The Heart Is Built Between
On choosing from the heart, the quiet difference between gathering and performing, and why the truest union is the one you stop outsourcing.
đď¸ Part 1: For the Writers
The Lovers is the most misread card in the whole deck.
Everyone sees the name and braces for roses and candlelight â soulmates, weddings, the kind of love that arrives on a white horse (or, in our case, a slightly damp bear). But thatâs not where this card actually lives.
Look closer. Two bears in twilight-purple robes stand on a rocky shore where the land falls away to the sea. They face each other, paws joined in the middle â and from that single point of contact, a heart of pink starlight blooms upward, its rays scattering into a deep blue, star-dusted sky. Autumn-gold trees frame them on either side. A stone path runs down between them to the waves.
Here is what the card is actually about: the light doesnât come from either bear alone. It rises from the place where they choose to meet.
The Lovers is the card of alignment. Of choosing from the heart instead of the âshould.â Of the union you build, deliberately, rather than the one you wait around to be rescued by.
And for writers, it shows up at a very specific fork: the moment you have to choose between the story you think youâre supposed to write and the one your heart is actually reaching for. Between performing on the page â and being present on it.
Because hereâs a thing worth sitting with this morning: most of us donât actually dread connection. We dread performance.
We donât hate the blank page. We hate the imagined room of people weâre performing for while we try to fill it â the critics, the algorithm, the version of âsuccessful authorâ we think we have to cosplay. And that imagined audience can squeeze every honest word right out of us.
You donât have to perform to be loved. You only have to show up as you actually are.
The Lovers puts a gentle paw on your arm and asks: are you writing to connect, or writing to impress? Are you choosing this story because itâs aligned â or because you think itâll finally earn you a seat at some table?
The work that lands is never the performed work. Itâs the present work. The honest sentence. The scene you wrote because you couldnât not write it. Readers can feel the difference between a bear performing and a bear simply standing on her own shore, telling the truth.
Where in your creative life are you performing instead of connecting?
What story is your heart actually reaching for â underneath the one you think you âshouldâ write?
What would change if you trusted that being yourself on the page is already enough?
đż Todayâs Practical Magick
Before you write a word today â or hit publish, or send the post â try this:
Hand on your chest. One slow breath. And ask quietly: Am I performing right now, or am I present?
Then write the next line from present. Thatâs the whole spell. đď¸đž
