The Sun — Nothing Left to Hide
On offering your work to the light with both paws open, and why unguarded joy is its own kind of sovereignty.
🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers
The Sun is not a subtle card. It never has been. There’s no cloaked figure here, no hooded ferryman, no dim room with a door barely cracked open. There’s a bear standing on a rocky outcrop above the water, wildflowers exploding in pink and purple all around her feet, both arms thrown straight up into a sky that is, quite frankly, on fire with light. One paw holds a single small flower up toward the sun — not clutched, not hidden behind her back to see if it’s safe to offer first. Just held up. Plainly. Here. Take it.
That’s the whole card, really. Nothing held back. Nothing performed for an audience that might judge it. Just an offering, made in full light, to a sun bright enough to see every petal of it.
I did not come to the edge to look down. I came because there was a star.” — but today, the star came all the way down to meet you
Here’s what The Sun knows about the creative life that a lot of us have to relearn the hard way:
Writers spend so much time managing how our work will be perceived — hedging, softening, tucking the vulnerable parts behind craft so no one can accuse us of oversharing, of being too much, of not being good enough to have earned the showing. We build elaborate blinds to filter the light before we let anyone see what we made.
The Sun doesn’t filter anything. The Sun says: hold it up. All of it. Let it be seen exactly as bright and unguarded as it actually is.
This isn’t a card about being fearless. It’s a card about being done hiding — which is a different, sturdier thing. The bear’s chest is completely open in this image. No crossed arms, no half-turn away from the light. That’s not naivety. That’s a creature who has decided the light is safe enough, or important enough, to stand in fully.
Where in your work have you been offering your writing with one paw still tucked behind your back — just in case?
What would it look like to hold your work up the way this bear holds up her flower — not performing joy, just genuinely, unguardedly proud of the small bright thing she made?
What’s the “sun” your work has been squinting away from, that might actually just be warmth?
🌿 Today’s Practical Magick
Before you sit down to write — or before you send that pitch, post that chapter, hit publish on the thing you’ve been sitting on — try this:
Stand for one breath with your arms loose at your sides, palms open and facing forward, like the bear. Not raised, just unguarded. Say quietly: I have nothing to hide from the light. What I made is allowed to be seen.
That’s it. That’s the spell. ☀️🐾
