Four of Pentacles — The Bear Who Tends the Glow
On holding what matters close — and why that’s not the same thing as being afraid to let go.
🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers
He’s not hunched in a city doorway, shutting out the world. He’s not white-knuckling coins in a counting house while life happens somewhere else without him. He’s not the miser the old books warned you about.
He is sitting under a star-scattered sky, wrapped in a deep magenta cloak, with four glowing pentacles held gently to his chest — and he is almost smiling.
There are wildflowers growing in the dark around him. The clouds are the color of a late-evening sky that can’t quite decide between dusk and dream. And those pentacles aren’t dull metal discs. They glow. They are warm and golden and alive, and he is holding them the way you’d hold something that matters. Not strangling. Not clutching. Tending.
That’s what the Four of Pentacles actually is, when you strip away the fear-based interpretation the old books gave it.
It is the card of the Wise Tender.
Writers have a complicated relationship with this card’s energy. Because we’ve been told, somewhere along the way, that holding on is the enemy. That flow requires release. That abundance means open hands, loose grip, constant generosity of time and energy and creative output.
And there is truth in that — eventually. In the right season.
But this bear is sitting under a waxing crescent sky. This is a seeding moon. And you do not scatter seeds recklessly in a seeding moon. You choose what you plant. You protect what you’ve already put in the ground. You tend.
Here’s what the Four of Pentacles knows about the writing life that nobody talks about:
Sometimes the most important creative act is conservation.
Not contraction. Not fear. Not hoarding your words until they calcify and the story dies unwritten. But genuine, intentional, wise tending of your energy, your resources, your creative reserves — so that when the time comes to pour it all out, you actually have something left to pour.
The writers who burn brightest and longest are not the ones who gave everything every single day until they had nothing left. They are the ones who learned, sometimes the hard way, to recognize a tending day when it arrived — and honored it without guilt.
Today might be a tending day for you.
Maybe your body is asking for something. Maybe your finances need a clear-eyed look rather than an anxious one. Maybe you’ve been so busy producing that you forgot to protect — your time, your health, your creative foundation, the glowing things you’ve already built.
The bear under the stars isn’t afraid. He’s intentional.
There’s a difference. And it matters enormously.
Sit with these today:
What are you holding that actually needs to be held right now — not released, but protected?
Where have you confused “tending” with “hoarding” and talked yourself out of necessary rest or consolidation?
What glows in your hands right now that you’ve been too busy to notice?
🌿 Today’s Practical Magick
When the urge to do more, push harder, or justify your stillness shows up today — and it will — try this:
Place both hands over your chest, just for a moment. Feel the warmth there. And say quietly:
“I am tending what glows. That is enough. That is the work.”
That’s the spell. The bear already knows it. 🌟🐾
