The Chariot — The Wayfinder
On holding the reins of your own life — and why discipline isn’t a cage, it’s the thing that sets you free.
🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers
The Chariot doesn’t ask if you’re ready.
He’s already moving.
In the Mama Bear Tarot, the bear of The Chariot rides a rocky ridge at the edge of the world — royal blue armor gleaming with gold, a fuchsia cape tearing back in the wind behind him. He holds a glowing cosmic staff raised toward a blazing star overhead, and in his other hand, the reins of two magnificent magenta wolves who pull as one toward the horizon. The sky around him is alive — streaked with cosmic fire, wheeling with stars — and he is not watching the sky. He’s watching the road.
He knows where he’s going.
This is the card of directed will. Not frantic energy — directed energy. There’s a difference, and writers know it in their bones, even when they can’t always access it.
Frantic energy looks like seventeen browser tabs, six half-started projects, a blinking cursor, and the low hum of guilt that follows you from room to room. It feels like motion. It produces very little.
Directed will looks quieter from the outside. It looks like closing the tabs. Choosing the one thing. Picking up the reins.
The Chariot’s wolves are not the same color by accident. In older decks, the sphinxes or horses are black and white — opposing forces, held in tension. Here, they’re both magenta. Both blazing. Both pointed the same direction. That’s what happens when you stop fighting yourself and start steering. Your energy stops canceling itself out and starts going somewhere.
Here’s what The Chariot knows about the creative life that we forget on the hard days:
Discipline is not the enemy of inspiration. It’s the chariot that carries it.
Inspiration is wild and beautiful and utterly unreliable as a sole means of transportation. It shows up when it wants, takes detours, stops to look at interesting rocks. You cannot build a body of work — a series, a career, a legacy — on inspiration alone.
But discipline without heart is just a grind. That’s not what this card is either.
The Chariot holds both. The wolves are the passion. The reins are the structure. The star blazing overhead is the WHY — the thing you’re aimed at, the thing that matters enough to get out of bed for even on the low-spoon days.
When you pick up your pen today, don’t ask yourself if you feel like writing. Ask yourself: what am I steering toward?
Because the bear in this card isn’t riding toward comfort. He’s riding toward something that matters more than comfort.
What are you riding toward?
Three questions to sit with:
What opposing forces inside you are pulling in different directions right now — and what would it feel like to point them both the same way?
What is the blazing star on your horizon? The reason that’s emotionally true, not just logically sensible?
Where have you been waiting for inspiration to arrive instead of picking up the reins yourself?
🌿 Today’s Practical Magick
Before you begin your most important work today, try this:
Place both hands on your desk or your keyboard. Take one slow breath. And say quietly: I know where I’m going. I pick up the reins.
That’s it. That’s the spell. You don’t need to feel certain. The bear doesn’t look certain — he looks committed. Those are different things. 🐺🐾
