Five of Wands — Not Every Wand Is Yours to Swing
On creative chaos, the gift of friction, and knowing which fight actually belongs to you.
🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers
The Five of Wands is a noisy card.
It doesn’t arrive with thunder or transformation. It doesn’t crack anything open or set anything on fire — at least, not on purpose. It shows up with five figures all holding wands, all convinced theirs is the most urgent, most important, most necessary thing in the room. Nobody is the villain. Nobody is even technically wrong. They’re just all... a lot. At once.
Writers know this card in their bones.
We know it as the Tuesday morning when three projects are equally urgent. We know it as the chapter that needs a total restructure and the email that needs answering and the newsletter that was due yesterday and the idea that just arrived, fully formed and demanding immediate attention, right in the middle of all of it. We know it as the inner voices that all raise their hands simultaneously — the perfectionist, the doubter, the dreamer, the taskmaster, the one who just wants to go lie down with the cats.
The Five of Wands is not a crisis. But it is a test.
Not every wand in the air is yours to swing.
Here’s what writers get wrong about this card: they think the answer is to calm the chaos. To eliminate the competing demands. To find the magical organizational system that will finally make everything quiet and orderly and lined up in a sensible row.
That’s not the card’s offer.
The Five of Wands doesn’t promise you silence. It offers you something far more useful: discernment.
The ability to look at all those competing wands and ask, clearly and without guilt, which one is mine today?
Because not all of them are. Some of those wands belong to someone else’s urgency, not yours. Some are old priorities that haven’t been formally decommissioned. Some are exciting and shiny and would be wonderful to pick up — but not today, not when the one wand that actually matters is still mid-swing.
The creative life is always a Five of Wands kind of life. There will always be more ideas than time, more projects than bandwidth, more voices than one writer can channel in a single sitting. This is not a flaw in your operating system. This is the feature. You are a person of many fires.
But a forest fire and a candle flame are both fire. One of them can read by.
Today’s invitation isn’t to put out all the wands. It’s to pick up the right one — the one that belongs in your hand right now — and swing with intention.
The rest can wait their turn. They’ll still be there. They’re always still there.
Where in your creative life are you swinging everyone’s wand but your own?
What is the one thing — the real one thing — that belongs in your hand today?
What would it feel like to set the others down gently, without guilt, just for today?
🌿 Today’s Practical Magick
Before you open your manuscript or your notebook or your blank page today, try this:
Write down everything competing for your attention. All of it — every project, every task, every voice in the room. Get them out of your head and onto paper so they stop fighting for airspace in your skull.
Then circle the one that is actually yours today. The one that, if you finished it or moved it meaningfully forward, would feel like a real win by tonight.
That’s your wand. Everything else is scenery.
Start there. 🔥🐾
