On wishes already granted, starlit stone paths, and why the one in your hands is the whole point.

🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers

The Nine of Cups does not look like what you think it looks like.

You probably expect a card called “the Wish Card” to look triumphant. Arms flung wide. Chest out. Some kind of victory pose under dramatic lighting.

But look at this bear.

She stands on a cobblestone path under a sky that is genuinely, extravagantly impossible — deep indigo and rose-pink nebula clouds and more stars than you could ever count in a single lifetime. Eight glowing golden cups rest behind her on the path, each one lit from within, each one full. And she is holding one more — the ninth — cradled in both paws, drawn close to her chest, held the way you hold something you almost lost.

She is not looking at the eight behind her. She is not scanning the horizon for a tenth. She is looking at the one in her hands right now, and the look on her face is not triumph.

It is tenderness.

That’s the thing about the Nine of Cups that nobody warns you about: it is not a card about arriving. It is a card about finally, actually noticing that you’re already there.

Writers are extraordinarily gifted at not noticing.

We are very good at the eight cups. We can catalog them in our sleep — the drafts finished, the chapters that actually worked, the story that surprised us, the world that built itself as we walked through it. We know they’re there. They’re behind us. They glow. And we are already two steps ahead, looking at where the next cup is supposed to appear.

The Nine of Cups puts both paws around the one you’re currently carrying and says: this one. Look at this one.

Not the book you haven’t written yet. Not the readers you haven’t found yet. Not the version of your career that lives in your imagination somewhere past the next hard thing.

This one. The chapter open on your screen. The character you love who doesn’t exist anywhere else yet. The sentence you wrote last Tuesday that you keep coming back to read again even though you’d never admit that to anyone.

That cup is glowing. It is full. It has your name on it.

The wish isn’t coming. The wish is what’s already in your hands.

Here’s what the Nine of Cups knows about the writing life:

We tend to treat fulfillment like a milestone we’ll reach later — when I finish the draft, when I publish, when I hit the numbers, when it finally feels real. The joy gets perpetually deferred to the next checkpoint. And the nine glowing cups behind us accumulate quietly, lighting up the path, and we step right over them on our way to the next task.

The Nine asks you to pause. Not forever. Not in some grand, ceremonial way. Just for a moment, both paws wrapped around what you’re carrying right now.

  • What story are you currently holding that you haven’t let yourself be glad about yet?

  • What cup is already glowing in your hands that you’ve been treating like a stepping stone?

🌿 Today’s Practical Magick

Before you open the document today, try this:

Put your hands flat on your desk — or around your coffee, or pressed to your sternum — and name one thing about your current project that is genuinely, specifically good. Not “it’ll be good when it’s done.” Something that’s good right now.

Say it out loud if you can.

That’s the cup you’re holding. Let it glow for a second before you go back to work. 🌟🐾

This is where The Mojo Mama Bear gets bear-bones honest about what this card stirred up on a Tuesday morning when she woke up with a Pink song in her head and a launch date on the horizon and a very tender, slightly terrified feeling in her chest that she’s been calling “readiness” and hoping nobody notices is also fear.
