King of Wands — Ruling from the Throne, Not the Field
On the difference between holding the fire and chasing it — and why some days the most powerful thing you can do is sit down and point.
🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers
The King of Wands is a card everyone expects to be loud. Fire suit. Crown energy. The master of will and vision and creative drive. Surely he’s the one sprinting across the field with the torch held high, rallying the troops, out-producing every other author in the room before breakfast.
Look again.
In this card, the bear is sitting down.
He’s settled deep on a carved stone throne, all scrollwork and worn sandstone pillars, under a twilight sky thick with stars. Blue mountains soften into the distance behind him. Wildflowers — red, pink, a shock of blue — push up through the rock along the steps, blooming without being asked to. A purple robe. A purple cape draped easy over one shoulder. His posture is loose. One paw rests on the arm of the throne.
And in the other paw: a torch. Not a hopeful little wand sprouting green leaves. Actual fire. The real thing. Held upright and calm — not waved, not brandished, not chased.
That, my dear writers, is the entire teaching.
The King of Wands is the fully-grown version of creative fire. He has already lived through his impulsive years — the all-nighters, the frantic sprints, the “I’ll rest when the book is done” seasons that left him face-down on the floor. He survived them. And what he learned on the other side is the thing most of us resist with our whole bodies:
Mastery is not doing more. Mastery is directing.
The King doesn’t haul the logs. He doesn’t format the manuscript at 2am with his own two paws while his eyes cross. He sees the whole map, he knows exactly where the fire needs to go, and he points. He lets the smaller hands — the tools, the systems, the future version of himself, the people he trusts — carry what doesn’t require his throne.
Here’s where this lands for the working author:
You are allowed to be the visionary and not the mule.
You are allowed to know your story cold, hold your creative authority with a settled grip, and still hand off the connective tissue. The email you draft once and reuse. The task you finally delegate. The “no” you say to the shiny thing so the real thing gets your fire. The rest day that is not a failure of will but an exercise of it.
The exhausting version of this card believes sovereignty must be earned through output — that you’re only allowed on the throne once you’ve proven you can outwork everyone below it.
The healed version knows better. The bear is already on the throne. He didn’t grind his way up the steps this morning. He simply sat down and held the flame steady.
You don’t have to explain the scepter. You just hold it.
🌿 Today’s Practical Magick
The next time the “I should be doing more” voice starts up — the one that says resting is quitting, that directing is cheating, that if you didn’t sweat you didn’t work —
Try this. Sit down. Actually sit. Put one paw flat on the arm of your chair like it’s a throne (because today, it is). And ask yourself one King of Wands question:
“What here actually needs my fire — and what am I only carrying out of habit?”
Then set down one log. Delegate it, delay it, or bless-and-bump it. Just one.
That’s the spell. You’re not doing less. You’re ruling. 🔥🐾
