The Hierophant

On the difference between gathering wisdom and receiving it — and why some days call you to close the book.

🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers

The Hierophant sits enthroned on old stone steps, in front of a temple that has clearly stood for a very long time. He wears deep magenta robes, a golden staff in one paw, an open book in the other. Above him, a scatter of pink, glowing cards drift through a starlit teal sky like they’re arriving from somewhere he can’t quite see.

And his eyes are closed.

That’s the detail that undoes the whole “stuffy old teacher” read of this card. He isn’t lecturing. He isn’t even reading anymore. The book is open in his hand, but his face has gone soft and still, like he stopped needing his eyes the second the real information started arriving.

The book is open. But the wisdom is coming in through a different door today.

The Hierophant gets misread as “tradition for tradition’s sake” — rules, structure, the old ways because they’re old. But look at this bear again. He’s not clutching the book like a shield. He’s holding it open and loosely, because he already knows the deeper truth it took him a lifetime to learn: information lives on the page, but wisdom arrives when you finally stop scanning the lines and let yourself be taught.

For writers, this card shows up at the exact moment we’re tempted to muscle through something alone — plot problems, craft questions, a body that’s telling us something — instead of letting an expert, a mentor, or our own quieter knowing do the telling.

  • Where in your creative life are you white-knuckling a problem you could simply ask someone about?

  • What would it feel like to close the book for a moment and just receive the answer instead of hunting for it?

  • Who is the “Hierophant” in your life right now — the person whose counsel you trust enough to actually follow?

🌿 Today’s Practical Magick

Sometime today, find one moment to close your eyes the way this bear has — not to disappear, but to actually receive. Before you ask your next question (of a doctor, a mentor, your own gut), take one slow breath and silently say:

I don’t have to figure this out alone. I only have to listen for the answer.

That’s it. That’s the spell. 📖🐾
