Knight of Pentacles â He Already Knows Where He's Going
On doing the unglamorous work with a steady heart â and keeping your eyes on whatâs beyond the coin.
đď¸ Part 1: For the Writers
Look at him.
Heâs not galloping or charging dramatically toward some distant horizon with his mane flying and his armor gleaming. Heâs standing on ancient, cracked stone ground â wildflowers pushing up around him in the dark anyway, because thatâs what wildflowers do â wrapped in a deep magenta cloak that has clearly seen some weather, and he is holding that glowing pentacle up toward the stars.
Not clutching it. Not counting it. Not staring at it.
Offering it.
And his eyes â his eyes are looking past it. Up and beyond. At the vast cosmic sky, the pink-violet clouds, the scattered stars. At whatâs coming. At what all of this is actually for.
Thatâs the Knight of Pentacles. And thatâs what makes him different from every other knight in the deck.
The other knights are all motion and fire and drama. The Knight of Wands is already three kingdoms away chasing a vision. The Knight of Swords is mid-charge, sword raised, probably yelling something. The Knight of Cups is writing a love poem on horseback, which is genuinely impressive if also deeply impractical. đđ¤Ş
But this one? This one stopped. Planted his feet on rocky ground. Looked up. And said: I know what this is for. I know where itâs going. And I will carry it there steadily, no matter how long it takes.
Writers meet the Knight of Pentacles at a very specific moment in their creative lives.
Itâs not the glamorous moment. Itâs not the launch day or the finished draft or the moment a reader messages you at midnight to say your book changed something in them. Itâs the moment before all of that. The moment that makes all of that possible.
Itâs the Thursday morning when you have work to do that isnât The Work â but it funds The Work. Itâs the chapter that doesnât flow easily but needs to exist so the next one can sing. Itâs the Substack post, the admin task, the thing on the list that your creative soul doesnât exactly light up for but your wiser self understands completely.
Itâs the unglamorous middle of the becoming.
And the Knight of Pentacles doesnât resent it. He doesnât perform enthusiasm he doesnât feel. He doesnât pretend the coin is the destination.
He holds it up toward the stars and says: I see you. I know what you represent. I know whatâs waiting on the other side of you. And that is enough for me to carry you well.
Hereâs what he wants you to know today:
The work that doesnât feel like your work is still building your world.
Every steady, methodical, unglamorous thing you do in service of the larger vision is a stone laid on the path toward it. The Knight doesnât skip stones. He doesnât leap dramatically from where he is to where he wants to be. He walks the rocky ground, wildflowers at his feet, eyes on the stars, and he advances.
Not sprints. Not charges. Advances.
And there is more dignity in that than in any dramatic gallop. Because he will actually arrive. đž
A few questions to sit with today:
What work are you doing right now that doesnât feel like The Work â but is quietly, faithfully building toward it?
Can you hold it up toward your own sky, the way he does? Not with resentment or resignation â but with recognition of what it represents?
What are the stars youâre advancing toward? Do you have them clearly in view?
đż Todayâs Practical Magick
The next time youâre doing the unglamorous work â the task that doesnât light your soul on fire but needs to be done â try this:
Before you begin, take one breath. Place both hands flat on your desk. And say quietly: I know what this is for. I know where itâs going. I carry it steadily.
Thatâs the Knightâs whole spell. It fits in one breath. đťâ¨
