Two of Pentacles — One Coin in Your Hands, One Coin in the Stars
On the art of releasing what you’re juggling long enough to let it fly — and trusting it will come back down.
🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers
Look at her.
She’s not running. She’s not frantic. She’s not standing at a whiteboard with seventeen color-coded sticky notes trying to figure out how to manage everything she’s been handed.
She’s standing on a rocky hillside at twilight — wildflowers at her feet, stars coming out above her — in her purple robe, completely calm. One glowing pentacle cradled against her chest. One released into the sky above her, rising, luminous, enormous — almost the size of the moon.
She’s not chasing it. She’s not panicking that she let go of it.
She is watching it go up with the quiet confidence of someone who knows it’s coming back down.
That’s the Two of Pentacles. Not the frantic juggler you might have seen in other decks — not the desperate performance of someone barely keeping things airborne. This bear knows something that took me a long time to learn:
You don’t have to hold everything at once to keep everything in motion.
Writers are, almost universally, people with too many things in the air.
We have the book we’re writing, and the book we’re planning, and the newsletter we’re behind on, and the social media we’re avoiding, and the day job that pays the bills, and the creative project that feeds the soul, and the inbox, and the budget, and the health stuff we keep meaning to address, and the dream that lives in the back of our chest like a pilot light that never fully goes out.
We have been told — by productivity culture, by hustle culture, by every well-meaning person who ever asked “so when’s the next book coming out?” — that the answer is to grip harder. Manage better. Optimize. System. Schedule. Hold it all simultaneously and do it with a smile.
The Two of Pentacles says: what if you just... released one coin into the sky?
Not abandoned it. Not dropped it. Not failed it.
Released it. With intention. With trust. Upward, toward the stars, with your hand open and your eyes soft and your feet still planted on the rocky ground beneath you.
Here’s what I’ve learned about creative sustainability, the hard way:
The things that matter most to us don’t disappear when we’re not white-knuckling them. The book doesn’t stop being real because you took a Wednesday off. The dream doesn’t dissolve because you rested instead of pushed. The coin doesn’t fall to the ground just because you stopped clutching it in both hands.
Some things need to be held. Some things need to be released into the air for a moment — trusted to the stars, to the timing, to the part of you that works even when you’re sleeping.
The Two of Pentacles isn’t asking you to do less. It’s asking you to do what you do with trust instead of terror.
One coin cradled close to your heart. One coin offered upward, released, allowed to rise.
The wildflowers are still blooming at her feet. The stars are coming out. The twilight is that particular shade of blue that means the day is ending and something quieter and more honest is beginning.
She is not behind. She is not failing. She has not dropped any of her responsibilities.
She is simply in rhythm with them instead of at war with them.
Ask yourself today:
What are you gripping so hard your paws are tired?
What could you release upward — not forever, just for now — and trust to the stars?
What would it feel like to hold one thing close and let the other one rise?
🌿 Today’s Practical Magick
The next time you feel the familiar tightening of overwhelm — the “I should be doing more, managing better, holding tighter” voice — try this:
Open one hand. Just one. Palm up, facing the sky.
Breathe in. And imagine releasing the thing you’ve been clutching hardest — not to lose it, but to let it rise for a moment. To trust it to something bigger than your grip.
That’s the spell. Open hand. Upward release. Trust the return.
The coin always comes back down. 🌟🐾
