Four of Pentacles â The Bear Who Holds What Matters
On the difference between hoarding from fear and holding from wisdom â and why the Full Moon is the perfect time to know which one youâre doing.
đď¸ Part 1: For the Writers
The Four of Pentacles is one of the most misread cards in the deck.
Most people look at it and see a miser. A hoarder. Someone clinging too tightly to what they have, too afraid to let it go, too closed off to receive anything new.
But look at this bear.
Draped in a deep magenta cloak on a twilight stone path, four glowing pentacle coins pressed gently to their chest â not gripped, not clutched, but held. The way youâd hold something you love. The way youâd hold something that cost you something real to build. The stars are out overhead. Blue wildflowers bloom quietly at the edges of the frame. And the bearâs expression isnât fearful or pinched or guarded.
Itâs settled.
That is not a bear who is afraid of losing what they have.
That is a bear who knows exactly what theyâre carrying and exactly why it matters.
Thereâs a particular kind of writer who shows up to this card often â and I suspect you know who you are.
Youâve been building something. Slowly, imperfectly, in between the rest of your actual life. Youâve made hard decisions about where your time goes. Youâve said no to things that didnât serve the work. Youâve protected pockets of creative energy like they were rare and finite â because they are.
And somewhere along the way, someone (maybe even the voice inside your own head) started calling that selfishness.
The Four of Pentacles would like a word.
Protecting what youâve built is not the same as being closed off. Holding your resources carefully is not the same as hoarding. Saying âthis time, this energy, this creative space is mine and Iâm not giving it awayâ is not fear.
It is wisdom.
Holding with intention is not the same as holding from fear.
The question this card asks â and itâs a good one, especially on a Full Moon when everything is illuminated â is not are you holding on too tightly?
The real question is: do you know WHY youâre holding?
Because holding from fear looks like: never launching, never sharing, never letting the work be seen. It looks like stockpiling drafts that never go out. It looks like protecting your creative life so fiercely that nothing can get in â including the readers who need what youâre making.
But holding from wisdom looks like this bear. Sitting with intention on ancient stone. Stars overhead. Wildflowers at the edges. Knowing what matters. Knowing whatâs worth protecting. And being so settled in that knowing that you can look slightly away from what youâre carrying â because youâre not afraid itâs going to disappear.
You built something real. On a Full Moon, the invitation is to see it clearly.
Hold it like the bear does â pressed close to your chest, under the stars, not because youâre afraid, but because you know its worth.
Where in your creative life are you holding wisely â and where might fear be wearing wisdomâs clothes?
What have you built in the last six months that you havenât stopped to actually appreciate?
What would it feel like to sit down under the stars tonight and say: âI know what Iâm carrying, and it mattersâ?
đż Todayâs Practical Magick
Tonight â or even right now, with your morning coffee â try this:
Place both hands over your heart. Think of one thing youâve built, protected, or held onto carefully in your creative life. Not the finished product. The effort. The showing up. The choosing it again and again even when it was hard.
And say quietly: I know what Iâm carrying. And it was worth protecting.
Thatâs the bearâs spell. Simple. Grounded. Glowing like a pentacle in the dark. đđž
