On what flows between two forces that finally find each other — and why the most sacred exchange in your creative life might be the one happening inside you.

🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers

The Two of Cups is not a card about romance, exactly.

It’s a card about recognition.

That moment when two things — two people, two ideas, two halves of something that has been holding itself apart — finally turn toward each other, extend what they’re carrying, and let the energy move between them. Something rises from that meeting that neither could have created alone. You can see it in the card: the heart doesn’t belong to either bear. It rises between them. From the meeting itself.

Writers know this experience. We just rarely name it.

We know it in the moment a character we’ve been wrestling with suddenly clicks — when we stop forcing them toward the plot’s requirements and start actually listening to who they are. The resistance dissolves. The cup extends. The scene writes itself. Something that felt like work becomes something that feels like remembering.

We know it in the invisible exchange between writer and reader — that intimate moment when someone opens your book and the world you built begins to live inside them. You will never meet most of your readers. You will never know their names or what they carried with them into your story. And yet something real passes between you, through the pages, across whatever distance exists. That is the Two of Cups. That is the heart that rises when the story and the person who needed it finally find each other.

But the version of this card I want to talk about today is the one that happens when both forces meeting are you.

There’s a particular kind of creative struggle that isn’t about craft or skill or time. It’s about a writer who is fundamentally at war with herself. The part that wants to write the weird, true, deeply personal thing — and the part that says that’s too much, too vulnerable, too strange, who do you think you are. The ambitious self and the frightened self, circling each other, each waiting for the other to blink first.

The Two of Cups asks: what if you stopped fighting and started meeting?

What if both versions of you extended their cups toward each other? What if something rose from that — not a victor, not an exhausted compromise, but a third thing, something new, that neither part of you could have made alone?

That is how the best writing happens. Not from the part of you that’s brave, performing bravery for an invisible audience. Not from the part of you that’s afraid, white-knuckling through the resistance. From the meeting between them. From the moment they look at each other across the distance and finally, genuinely, say: I see you. I’m not leaving. Let’s do this together.

The heart rises from the meeting.

What I offer freely, I am also worthy to receive.

  • Where in your creative life are you waiting for someone — a reader, a mentor, the right opportunity — to finally recognize what you’re building?

  • What would shift if you offered that recognition to yourself first?

  • What would your writing life look like if the two cups were already touching?

🌿 Today’s Practical Magick

The next time you sit down to write and feel the internal war begin — the part that wants to and the part that resists — try this before you reach for force or avoidance:

Place both hands flat on your desk, or your heart, or your thighs. Take one full breath in. And say quietly, to both parts of yourself:

I’m here. I see you. Let’s write together.

That’s the whole spell. The heart rises from the meeting. 🥂🐾
