Six of Swords — The Boat Is Already Moving
On crossing from turbulent water to calmer shores — and why you don’t have to row harder to get there.
🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers
The Six of Swords is not a dramatic card.
It doesn’t have lightning bolts or towers crumbling. It doesn’t have swords through hearts or figures dancing on cliffs. It shows a boat. A figure or two, cloaked and quiet. A ferryman. And water — choppy behind them, smoother ahead.
It is the card of the crossing. And it shows up for writers at a very specific moment: not when the storm hits, but in the quiet, exhausted, slightly numb aftermath — when you’re finally out of the worst of it, but you’re not quite sure you’re safe yet.
“The boat is moving. You don’t have to row harder to get there.”
Here’s what the Six of Swords knows about the creative life:
Writers are extraordinarily good at surviving the storm. We have learned to work through hard things, to produce through the exhaustion, to keep showing up when everything in us is screaming for rest. We are, many of us, practically Olympic-level storm-survivors.
What we are often terrible at is letting the boat move without our frantic intervention.
We get out of the worst of it — the illness, the income crisis, the relationship implosion, the months of running on borrowed energy — and then, instead of sitting quietly in the boat and letting the calmer water carry us, we pick up an oar. We try to sprint. We make up for lost time. We push.
The Six of Swords puts a gentle but firm hand on your arm and says: not today, love.
The card’s message isn’t “give up.” It isn’t “stop.” It is: you are in transition. The worst is behind you. The calmer water is ahead. The crossing is already happening.
Your only job right now is to stay in the boat.
Where in your creative life have you been trying to sprint through a crossing that just needs to be crossed?
What would it feel like to trust that the forward motion is happening — even when you’re still and quiet?
What are you gripping that you could set down, just for today?
🌿 Today’s Practical Magick
The next time urgency spikes — the “I should be doing more” voice, the “I’m falling behind” hum — try this before you reach for the oar:
Place one hand on your chest. Take one slow breath in. And say quietly to yourself: The boat is moving. I’m already crossing.
That’s it. That’s the spell. 🚣🐾
