Nine of Swords

On the 3am brain, anticipatory dread, and the quiet difference between a danger you’re actually in and one your mind has only rehearsed.

🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers

The Nine of Swords is the card that wakes you at 3am.

Look at him. A bear on the edge of the bed, wrapped in his robe, one heavy paw pressed over his eyes. Head bowed. Shoulders curled. Behind him, glowing red and blue against the dark, nine swords hang on the wall. The window beside him shows a night sky thick with cloud — no dawn yet, just the long blue middle of the night when the mind does its loudest, lowest work.

But here is the thing the card wants you to notice:

The swords are on the wall. Not one of them is in him.

That is the entire secret of the Nine of Swords. The suffering in this card is not the suffering of a wound. It is the suffering of anticipation — the mind rehearsing the disaster, suffering the thing before it happens, and very often instead of it happening at all. The swords are mounted, displayed, hanging there in the dark like every worst-case scenario you’ve ever catalogued. And the bear sits beneath them, head in paws, paying the full emotional price of blades that have not touched him.

The danger I brace for is not the danger I’m in.

Writers know this card intimately, because the writing life runs on imagination — and the same engine that builds entire worlds out of nothing will, at 3am, build catastrophes out of nothing too. The book won’t sell. The review will be cruel. The income won’t come. They’ll all find out I was never any good at this. We are extraordinarily gifted at suffering things that have not happened. We will lie awake under nine glowing swords and call it realism.

The Nine of Swords does not tell you the swords aren’t real. They’re real. They’re right there, sharp and glinting. It simply, gently, turns your chin toward the wall and asks you to notice where they actually are.

Because there is a question that dissolves this card almost entirely, and it is this:

Is this happening now — or am I anticipating it?

Share

Sit with that for one honest breath. Most of what hangs on the wall at 3am is not happening now. It is a forecast, not a fact. And a forecast, however vivid, cannot cut you.

  • What would you set down today, if you trusted that the swords could stay on the wall?

  • What deadline, what fear, what imagined verdict have you been suffering in advance?

  • What would it feel like to lift your head — just for a moment — and look out the window instead?

🌿 Today’s Practical Magick

The next time the 3am brain spikes — even at 3pm, because it keeps its own hours — try this before you spiral into the forecast:

Place one hand on your chest. Drop your shoulders. Take one slow breath. And say, quietly: The swords are on the wall. They are not in me.

Then do one small, present-moment thing. Sip water. Pet the nearest cat. Step outside into the actual weather. The card loses its grip the instant you drop out of the imagined future and back into the real, ordinary, sword-free room you’re actually sitting in.

That’s the spell. 🗡️🐾
