Seven of Pentacles — The Fruit Is Already Glowing
On the long, quiet stretch between the planting and the harvest — and why the waiting isn’t wasted time.
🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers
The Seven of Pentacles is not a card that does anything.
And that’s exactly why it’s so hard.
Look at our bear. She’s standing on a rocky path at twilight, wrapped in a deep red cloak, the whole Milky Way spilling rose-gold and starlight behind her. Beside her grows a slender tree she planted — heavy with glowing pentacles, six of them tucked among the green leaves and red berries like little lanterns lit from the inside. And in her paws, she cradles a seventh. She’s turning it over. Studying it. Not harvesting. Not walking away. Just... looking at what she’s grown, and quietly deciding it was worth it.
This is the card of the ripening gap. The in-between. The pause between the work and the reward.
And here is what the Seven of Pentacles knows about the creative life:
Writers are extraordinary at the planting. We draft the book. We build the list. We send the pitch, format the file, schedule the posts, water the rows. We are practically Olympic-level planters.
What we are often terrible at is the waiting that comes after.
The fruit doesn’t ripen one second faster because you’re standing there staring at it.
Because here’s the uncomfortable truth of an author’s life: the work and the harvest almost never happen at the same time. You publish the book — and the royalties trail behind it by weeks-to-months. You send the email — and the answer comes back on someone else’s schedule. You do everything right, all of it, beautifully — and then there is nothing to do but stand in the row while the fruit does its slow, invisible swelling.
And in that gap, a particular madness sets in. The “I should be doing more” hum. The “this isn’t working” chorus. The urge to intervene in a process that is already correctly underway. The temptation — and the Seven of Pentacles names this as the great danger — to yank the plant up out of the soil just to check whether the roots are growing.
Don’t, love. The growth is happening exactly where you can’t see it. That’s not a flaw in your system. That’s just what orchards do.
The Seven of Pentacles puts a gentle paw on your arm and says: the lag is not the stalling. The lag is the growing.
Your only job, in the ripening gap, is to lean on the hoe and trust the swell.
What have you planted that hasn’t fruited yet — and have you mistaken its quiet for failure?
Where are you reaching for the root, when what’s actually needed is your patience?
What would it feel like to look at the half-grown thing and simply say, “I’m glad I planted you,” before you know how it turns out?
🌿 Today’s Practical Magick
The waxing crescent moon is with us — seedling energy, intentions pushing quietly up through soil. This is the moon for tending, not for harvesting.
So go find one growing thing today. A houseplant. An herb on the windowsill. The rosemary by your door. And instead of asking it the question we always ask — are you done yet? are you working? is it enough? — put your hands near it and say, quietly:
Thank you for growing. I trust you to take your time.
That’s the spell. You’re not just talking to the plant. 🌱🐾
