On remembering the magic you’ve been handing to everyone else — and finally turning it toward yourself.

🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers

She isn’t standing at a table.

In the Bear Bones Tarot, The Magician doesn’t have the usual spread of trinkets and tools laid out in a tidy row. She is standing on stone steps — elevated, deliberate, chosen — in robes the color of deep magenta and rose. At her chest, an amulet glows. Beside her, a staircase of books rises in a careful pyramid. And one paw reaches upward toward the cosmos while the galaxy above her responds.

Not passively. Not distantly.

The stars are spiraling outward from the point where her paw meets the light.

She is smiling. Quietly. Like she already knows.

The tools on the table are already yours. The question The Magician asks is simply: when are you going to use them?

Here’s what I want you to notice about her tools: they’re books.

Not a wand. Not a chalice or a pentacle. Books. Stacked in a deliberate pyramid beside her, each one a foundation for the one above it. She didn’t just accumulate knowledge — she built something from it. And now she stands above that structure, one paw in the cosmos, because the foundation is solid enough to hold her weight while she reaches.

That is The Magician’s secret that nobody tells you.

She doesn’t conjure from nothing. She transforms what’s already there.

Writers understand this card in a particular way, because we have a very specific relationship with our own tools. We know, in intimate detail, every story we haven’t finished. Every idea we’ve shelved. Every skill we’ve built and then set aside because something more urgent came along. We keep meticulous inventory of our creative debts.

What we are spectacularly bad at is taking inventory of what we have.

The Magician stands beside her stack of books and says: look at what you’ve built. Look at what you already know. Look at the skills in your hands, the stories in your chest, the world you’ve constructed one sentence at a time.

That is not nothing. That is a foundation. That is the platform you are already standing on.

Now — which dream are you eager to bring to life?

Close your eyes and see yourself living it. Feel the specific, unglamorous, ordinary details of that future. The morning routine. The royalties notification. The reader who emails to say this changed something in me. The moment you realize the work is paying for the life.

Now trace your steps backward from that moment to today.

What was the last thing that had to happen before you arrived there? And before that? And before that?

Keep going until you arrive at the step you can take today. The one small, specific, real thing that is the first brick in the road to that future.

That’s the work The Magician is asking you to do today. Not the whole staircase. Not the whole galaxy. Just the first reach of the paw toward the light.

The stars are already spiraling. They are already responding to you.

The only question is whether you’re going to reach.

Today’s Practical Magick 🌿

Get a piece of paper — or open a blank document — and write at the top: I am living this dream:

Finish that sentence. Don’t be practical. Don’t be reasonable. Just write what the dream actually is.

Then below it, work backward. What had to happen right before this? And before that? Keep going until you hit something you can do this week. This day. This hour.

That’s your roadmap. The Magician just handed you a quill. 🐾✨
