On the card that isn’t about romance, the creative self that never actually left, and what happens when you stop searching for wholeness and let it find you instead.

🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers

The Lovers is not a romance card.

I know. Every part of the name argues otherwise. But pull it from the deck and sit with it — really sit with it — and what you’ll feel underneath the pink glow and the reaching paws isn’t longing for another person.

It’s longing for yourself.

The Lovers is the card of integration. Of reunion. Of two things that looked separate across a dark room suddenly recognizing each other and understanding, with the kind of certainty that lives below thought, that they were never actually divided.

In the Bear Bones Tarot, The Lovers shows two bears on a rocky shoreline — purple robes, paws outstretched, touching at center. Behind them the ocean churns. Trees frame the edges. And between their touching paws, a blazing pink heart erupts upward into a starlit sky, light rays shooting outward in every direction like a signal, like a beacon, like something that has been waiting a very long time to finally be released.

Here is what strikes me every time I look at this card:

The heart isn’t descending from above like a blessing bestowed on the worthy.

It’s being generated. Rising upward from the exact point where the two paws meet. They are making it themselves, between them, out of what they already have.

That is the whole message of this card for writers today.

Not: go find the missing piece.

But: look at what you’re already making between your own two paws.

Writers are extraordinarily good at the waiting version of longing.

We wait to feel ready. We wait until the conditions are right, until the muse shows back up, until the block lifts, until we have enough time or enough confidence or enough proof that this whole endeavor isn’t a beautiful mistake we’re going to regret on our deathbeds.

We put things down — projects, practices, whole creative identities — and we tell ourselves it’s temporary, just until things settle, just until we get through this season… just until…

And then the weeks blur into months and we start to wonder whether the part of us that loved the work — that burned for it, that couldn’t sleep because of it — has quietly packed her things and found somewhere warmer to live.

The Lovers today wants to tell you something about that fear.

She didn’t leave.

She’s been inside every practical decision you’ve made. Every tool you picked up for a sensible reason that turned out to light something up in you. Every time your hand reached for something before your brain caught up and made it complicated. Every moment you caught yourself caring more than you meant to.

The creative self doesn’t disappear during the survival seasons.

She waits. She adapts. She hides inside the “practical” until you give her an opening.

And then — when you’re not looking, when you’re doing something else entirely, when your hands are busy and your guard is down — she shows back up and hands you a paintbrush.

The Lovers doesn’t ask you to find what you lost. It asks you to notice that it found you.

Here is what this card is asking you today:

  • Where have you been waiting to feel whole before you begin — when wholeness might actually be what happens when you begin?

  • What two parts of yourself have you been treating as opposites — the practical and the creative, the strategic and the intuitive, the maker and the analyst — that might actually be the same bear in different robes?

  • What is already being generated between your own two paws that you haven’t stopped long enough to notice?

🌿 Today’s Practical Magick

Try this, just once today, before the to-do list takes over:

Place both hands flat on the surface in front of you — desk, table, whatever is there. Feel the solidity of it. Take one breath in.

And ask yourself quietly: what am I already making?

Not what should I be making. Not what am I failing to make. What is already being made — between these two hands, in this one life, right now?

Let the answer be smaller than you expect. Let it be as humble as a single sentence, a single page read, a single print pulled from a machine, a single morning where you held the worry without letting it drive.

That is the heart erupting upward.

That is The Lovers, in action, in your actual life, today.
