Three of Wands — She Already Sent the Ships

On watching the horizon you built — and trusting what’s already in motion.

🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers

The Three of Wands is not a card of waiting.

I know it looks like it. She’s seated on the cliff, still and unhurried, gazing out at the open water. She’s not running anywhere. She’s not scrambling, not hustling, not white-knuckling some frantic next step.

But look closer at what she’s holding.

One wand blazes in her paw, raised toward the twilight sky — not searching for something, but signaling it. And two more wands are already planted behind her on the rock, their lights glowing steady and pink in the dimming light. The sea is wide and calm. The stars are already coming out above her.

She didn’t just arrive at this cliff. She’s been here a while.

The Three of Wands shows up for writers at a very specific moment: after the decision, but before the arrival.

After the work is sent out into the world — the book uploaded, the Substack published, the idea finally acted on — but before the results come back. After the ships leave the harbor, while they’re still somewhere on the open water, heading toward shores you can’t see yet.

This is the moment most writers do themselves the most damage.

Because the ships are out. The work is real. The trajectory is set. And instead of sitting on the cliff with quiet confidence, watching the horizon with the kind of settled knowing this bear has — we go back inside. We refresh our dashboards. We second-guess the cover. We start mentally drafting the pivot plan for when it doesn’t work out. We decide the ships probably sank.

The Three of Wands says: stop going back inside.

You have already done something brave. You sent something out. You made a decision, planted a wand, took a step that cost you something — time, comfort, certainty, the familiar smallness of staying put. That already happened. It’s already real.

Your only job now is to hold your wand steady and watch the water.

Not with desperate hoping. Not with anxious scanning for any sign of movement. With the kind of grounded, knowing patience that comes from having done the work — and understanding that the work was good enough to merit this view.

The ships are coming back. You sent them out well.

  • Where in your creative life are you still going back inside, when you should be watching the horizon?

  • What would it feel like to sit with the quiet confidence of a bear who knows she did something real — and is simply waiting for reality to catch up?

  • What’s one wand you’ve already planted that you’ve forgotten to count?

🌿 Today’s Practical Magick

On a Full Moon day, the horizon is especially bright, even through clouds. Try this:

Find one moment today — even sixty seconds — where you physically stop and look at the farthest thing you can see from where you are. A window, a porch, a doorway. Look out as far as your eyes will go.

And say quietly to yourself: My ships are out. The work is real. I don’t have to go back inside.

That’s the spell. That’s the Three of Wands. 🌊🐾
