Page of Pentacles — The One Who Holds the Coin Up to the Light
On learning to be a student of your own life — and why tending counts as building.
🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers
The Page of Pentacles doesn’t look like a writer’s card at first glance.
There’s no dramatic energy here. No swords, no storms, no crumbling towers. No grand gestures or crossroads or winged figures descending from the clouds. Just a young figure standing in a green field, holding a single gold coin aloft, looking at it with the kind of quiet, absorbed attention most of us only manage for about forty-five seconds before our phone buzzes.
But stay with it a moment. Because this card has something important to say to writers specifically — and it’s something we need to hear on rest days most of all.
The Page of Pentacles is the student of the earth court. They are new to this. They are learning. And crucially — they are not embarrassed by that. They are not pretending to know more than they do. They are not rushing toward the Knight’s action or the Queen’s mastery or the King’s authority. They are standing in a field, holding one thing, and paying full, undivided attention to it.
The Page doesn’t need to plant the whole field today. One coin, held up to the light, is enough.
Here’s what this card knows about the writing life that we often forget:
There is a version of productivity that looks like output. Word counts, publishing dates, newsletter open rates, royalty dashboards. That version of productivity has its season — we know this, we’re building toward it — but it is not the only kind of work that matters.
There is another kind of work that looks like rest. Like cooking a meal slowly and on purpose. Like tidying a corner of a room until it feels like yours again. Like sitting in a chair you chose for yourself in a nook you built for yourself and just... being in it for a while. Not writing. Just being there. Just learning what it feels like to occupy the creative space you’ve been building.
The Page of Pentacles calls this tending. And tending is not the opposite of building — it is building. Slower, quieter, earthier. But no less real.
Writers, especially those of us who’ve spent years in survival mode, often have a complicated relationship with rest days. The inner critic has opinions. The to-do list has opinions. The bank account sometimes has very loud opinions.
But the Page holds up one coin — one small, tangible, real thing — and says: look at this. Look at what you have. Look at what you’re learning. Look at what’s already here.
Where in your creative life have you been rushing past the tending stage, trying to get to the harvest?
What would it feel like to hold your current work-in-progress up to the light today — not to critique it, not to push it further — just to look at it with appreciation for what it already is?
What one small, earthly, physical act today could be an act of creative devotion?
🌿 Today’s Practical Magick
The next time the “I should be doing more” voice shows up today — and it might, because it has very poor timing and no respect for weekends 🤪 — try this:
Pick up something physical. A mug. A crystal. A wooden spoon mid-stir. Hold it for just a moment. Feel the weight of it. And say quietly: I am tending. Tending counts.
That’s the spell. The Page would approve. 🌱🐾
