Ace of Swords — One Clear Light Is Enough
On the single true thought that cuts through the fog — and why you don’t have to swing the whole blade to feel its power.
🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers
The Ace of Swords is the suit of Air taking its first clean breath.
In our deck, the bear stands on a rocky outcrop at twilight, lifting a sword by its golden hilt. The blade points straight up into a burst of white-gold starlight, brilliant against a deep blue sky scattered with stars — a shooting star streaking past his shoulder. Below him, the clouds melt into rose and violet and the last warm orange of sunset. Purple wildflowers bloom around the stone at his feet.
And here is the part I want you to notice: he is not swinging it. He is not slashing, not striking, not bracing for a fight. He’s holding the blade up to the light and simply looking at it. Calm. Steady. Seeing.
The blade doesn’t have to fall to do its work. Sometimes clarity is just lifting one true thing up to the light.
That is the gift the Ace of Swords brings to the creative life, and it’s a gift writers chronically misuse.
We are extraordinary at working in the fog. We draft through confusion, we push through the murk, we keep our heads down and our hands moving even when we can’t quite see the shape of the thing yet. That’s a real skill, and it gets a lot of words on the page.
But the Ace of Swords offers something the fog can never give you: the single clean cut. The one true sentence. The moment you finally see what your story is actually about — underneath the plot, underneath the worldbuilding, underneath all the lovely scaffolding you’ve built. The logline that makes you exhale. The edit that removes the one paragraph and suddenly the whole chapter breathes.
And that clarity rarely arrives from swinging harder. It arrives the way it arrives for the bear — in a moment of stillness, when you stop hacking at the brush long enough to lift one true thing up and look at it.
You don’t have to wield the entire blade today. You just have to see the light on its tip.
Where have you been swinging the whole sword — force, hustle, output, more-more-more — when one clean cut would have done the job?
What is the one true thing your current project is actually about, underneath everything else?
What thought, if you finally named it out loud, would cut straight through the fog you’ve been drafting in?
🌿 Today’s Practical Magick
Before you write today — or before you rest, if that’s what today is for — try a small spell of one clean line.
Take one slow breath. And in your mind, finish this sentence with the very first true thing that rises, no editing allowed:
“The one thing I actually know right now is ______.”
Whatever surfaces — that’s your sword tip catching the light. You don’t have to act on it. You don’t have to build a plan around it. You just have to see it.
That’s the whole spell. One breath. One true thing. Lifted to the light. 🗡️✨
