Death — The Scythe Was Never For Cutting You Down
On the difference between an ending and an amputation — and why some blades exist to catch the light, not swing it.
🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers
Death is the card everyone flinches at before they’ve even looked at it properly.
But look at ours. This bear isn’t crouched over a battlefield. She’s standing on a rock outcrop in a field of pink wildflowers, cloak snapping in the wind, scythe lifted — not down, not swinging, up — into a sunburst so bright it’s throwing sparks across half the sky. This is not a card about destruction. This is a card about a weapon that got repurposed into a torch.
Here’s what that means for the creative life:
Every writer carries old tools they built during harder seasons. The scarcity pricing. The “grateful for whatever crumbs of work show up” mindset. The manuscript you keep small because a bigger version of it feels too exposed, too loud, too “who do you think you are.” Those tools got you through something real. They were never stupid. They were survival.
But a scythe held low, swinging at shadows, just keeps cutting the same field over and over. Nothing new grows there. The bear in this card figured something out: eventually you have to lift the blade. Point it at the light instead of the threat. Let it become an instrument of harvest instead of defense.
The scythe was never for cutting you down. It was for cutting you loose.
Where in your creative work are you still gripping an old tool built for an old danger — long after the danger’s actually passed?
What would it look like to lift that same tool toward something you want, instead of something you fear?
What “small story” have you been pricing, writing, or building around — that the evidence in your actual life has already outgrown?
🌿 Today’s Practical Magick
Next time you catch yourself shrinking a number, an idea, or a sentence down to fit an old fear instead of your current reality — pause. Put a hand on your sternum. Say quietly:
I am allowed to lift the blade toward the light.
That’s it. That’s the spell. 🌾🐾
