Four of Swords — The Praying Bear
On the difference between the sword you’re holding and the ones you’ve already laid down.
🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers
Look at this bear. Hood up. Eyes closed. Hands pressed together in something between prayer and surrender. One sword glows against his chest — not gripped, not raised, just resting there, close to the heart, still lit up but quiet. And below him, planted in the stone like they grew there: three more swords. Already down. Already still.
This is not a bear mid-battle. This is a bear who has stopped.
The Four of Swords gets misread a lot in creative circles. We think rest is what happens after the work is finished — a reward we haven’t technically earned yet because there’s always one more chapter, one more edit pass, one more launch to get through first.
But look closer at this card. The three grounded swords aren’t gone. They’re not defeated or broken. They’re simply not needed right now. And the fourth one — the one still glowing — isn’t being swung. It’s being held against the heart, softly, like something sacred instead of something to wield.
Not every sword needs a hand around it right now.
That’s the whole teaching. You don’t have to disarm completely to rest. You don’t have to finish the war to sit down for an afternoon. You just have to recognize which swords are asking to be picked back up today, and which ones are simply allowed to lie in the grass a while.
Where in your creative life are you white-knuckling a sword that’s already done its job for today?
What would it feel like to let one blade rest against your chest instead of in your hand?
Who told you that stillness has to be earned before it’s allowed?
🌿 Today’s Practical Magick
Sit the way this bear sits — spine soft, hands together, shoulders down from your ears. Take one breath in through the nose, hold for a beat, and let it go slow.
As you exhale, mentally set one sword down. Just one. Not all of them — one is plenty for today.
That’s the spell. Bear-simple, bear-effective. 🐾✨
