Three of Swords — When Distance Is a Shield (and When It’s a Wound)

This card showed up for me this morning, and I didn’t flinch —
because the Three of Swords isn’t subtle, and today didn’t ask for subtlety.

This is the card of heart pain, yes —
but more specifically, it’s the card of protective separation.

And I want to talk about it in two parts —
because the Three of Swords doesn’t just speak to heartbreak.

It speaks to distance.

🪶 Part 1: For the Writers

The Three of Swords shows up when the heart has learned — through experience — that closeness can hurt.

For writers, this often looks like:

  • Holding readers at arm’s length because vulnerability once cost you something

  • Keeping your work “almost finished” but not quite shared

  • Staying busy with systems, planning, and prep instead of letting yourself be seen

  • Convincing yourself you’re just being “practical” when you’re actually being protective

This card isn’t shaming that instinct.

It’s honoring it.

Because there was a time when distance kept you safe.

But here’s the hard, holy question the Three of Swords asks:

🗝️ Which boundaries are still medicine — and which have quietly turned into armor?

Some distance is real and necessary.
Bodies have limits. Resources have limits. Life has weather.

But some distance is habit.

And habits can be examined without being destroyed.

✨ The Three of Swords doesn’t demand exposure.
It invites discernment.

🔮 Today’s Practical Magick

The One-Inch Soften

You are not being asked to open the gates.

Just soften one inch.

  • Share one honest sentence.

  • Let one piece of work be imperfectly visible.

  • Allow one safe connection to feel slightly closer than usual.

Then stop.

That’s the work.
