On sovereign authority, stone thrones at the edge of storms, and why you don’t have to explain your crown to anyone.

🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers

Look at him. Golden armor. Magenta robes pooling around him like the remnants of every storm he’s already outlasted. A scepter raised — not in threat, not in demand — but simply held, the way someone holds a thing they’ve always known belongs to them. A blue gem glowing at his chest like a compass that points inward. And behind him: churning sea, distant mountains, a sky caught somewhere between dusk and breaking open.

He is not standing. He is not pacing. He is not braced for what comes next.

He is seated.

The Emperor doesn’t hover over his kingdom in a panic. He sits at the edge of everything — ocean at his back, mountains on the horizon, storm clouds gathering — and he is still. Because he knows something that anxious creators forget approximately forty times a day:

Authority doesn’t require effort to prove itself. It just requires you to stop abandoning it.

Here’s what The Emperor knows about the writing life that most writing advice completely ignores:

We have been taught that creative authority looks like productivity. That the boss of your own author life is the one producing the most words, the most posts, the most content, the most everything. That sovereignty means output. That the crown only fits when you’ve earned it this week, this month, this quarter.

The Emperor on his stone throne at the edge of the sea would like a word.

He would like to point out, very calmly, that he is not doing anything in this image. He is sitting. He is watching. He is holding his scepter with the easy confidence of someone who stopped needing to wave it around to prove a point a long time ago.

The creative life you are trying to build — the books, the stories, the Substack, the world you are making from scratch with your own two hands — it needs you to be The Emperor sometimes. Not the frantic intern trying to prove they deserve to be there. Not the overworked production manager spinning every plate.

The Emperor. The one who looks at their kingdom, nods slowly, and says: “Yes. This is mine. I built this. I know what stays and what goes.”

And then makes the call. Without a committee. Without a second opinion. Without apologizing for the decision afterward.

The card’s message that came through this morning was simple and devastating in the best possible way:

“Remember, you are the only boss of your own life — do your best.”

Not “do the most.” Not “do it perfectly.” Not “do it before anyone else gets ahead of you.”

Do your best. From the throne. In the armor you’ve earned. With the scepter already in your hand.

Three questions to sit with today:

  • Where in your creative life are you still waiting for someone to hand you permission to be in charge?

  • What decision have you been deferring — about your writing, your business, your creative direction — that only you are actually qualified to make?

  • What would it look like to make that call today, from a place of settled authority rather than anxious urgency?

🌿 Today’s Practical Magick

The next time you catch yourself explaining your creative choices to an imaginary critic — justifying why you’re writing, what you’re writing, why you’re building what you’re building, why you’re resting when you’re resting — try this:

Stop mid-sentence. Take one breath. And think of the bear on the stone throne.

He doesn’t explain the scepter. He just holds it.

That’s the whole spell. 👑🐾
