Three of Cups — The Light That Rises When We Raise Each Other

On celebration as a sacred act — and why joy shared under the stars hits different than joy kept quiet.

Part 1: For the Writers

In the Bear Bones Three of Cups, three bears stand at twilight in a field of wildflowers, robes the color of deep amethyst, golden cups raised toward a night sky scattered with stars.

The tallest bear lifts her cup highest — and where it meets the sky, something happens. The cup doesn’t just reflect the light. It generates it. A burst of pink and violet starlight explodes upward from the rim, illuminating everyone gathered beneath it. The two smaller bears flank her, their own cups raised, all three faces tilted up toward that impossible, beautiful light.

This is not a card about a party. It’s a card about what happens when people who genuinely love each other raise something up together.

The light doesn’t come from the sky. It comes from the cup. From the act of lifting it in the presence of those who matter.

Writers are, by the nature of our work, profoundly solitary creatures. We disappear into our heads for what seems like (or sometimes IS LOL) months at a time. We live in worlds no one else can see yet. We spend enormous amounts of energy creating something from nothing, and then we wonder why we feel depleted and a little lonely and vaguely untethered from the actual humans in our lives.

The Three of Cups doesn’t tell you to stop being a solitary creative. It tells you that the solitary creative also needs this. The raised cup. The witnesses. The people who look up at the same sky with you and say — yes, I see it too. That light is real. You are real.

Notice that in this card, the light only appears when all three cups are raised. Not one. Three. The magic is collective. It requires the gathering.

So today the card asks you to consider: who are your bears? Who stands beside you, robes slightly rumpled, cup raised anyway, face tilted up toward whatever you’re building together? And when did you last actually let them stand there — not as witnesses to your productivity, but as companions in your joy?

Today’s questions worth sitting with:

  • Where in your creative life have you been celebrating alone, in silence, in your own head — when you could have been raising a cup with someone who wanted to witness it?

  • What would it feel like to let today be genuinely, unapologetically good — even if everything isn’t perfect?

  • Who are your bears?

Today’s Practical Magick

At some point today — over coffee, over a meal, in a quiet moment — raise something. Literally or figuratively. A mug. A thought. A “hey, I’m really glad you’re here.” Let it be a small consecration of the actual goodness in front of you.

That’s the spell. The light comes from the raising. 🥂🐾

🔒 My personal version of the collective’s pull for today is below — for paid subscribers. This is where The Mojo Mama Bear gets “bear” bones about what the card stirred up this morning, and why the Three of Cups found me exactly when it needed to — and what it looks like in a real, unglamorous, unsexy day (off) in the life of a working author.
