On feeling everything without being undone by it — and why your emotional depth is the most powerful thing in the room.

🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers

Look at him — he’s not standing in triumph. He’s not mid-gesture, not rushing somewhere, not performing power for an audience. He is seated — on the earth itself, on rough stone that doesn’t give him comfort so much as ground. He holds the golden cup steady in one paw, tilted gently upward the way you’d hold something precious but familiar. Not clenched. Not displayed. Just... held.

Above his head, a crescent moon rises — not as a crown he was handed, but as one he earned. It isn’t sitting on him. It’s hovering above him, the way something luminous chooses to shine on a particular thing and stay. Like the moon looked at this bear and decided he was worth the light.

And at his chest — right over his heart — he wears it openly. A heart. Blue as deep water, set in gold, on a chain he chose to put on every single morning. He is not hiding what he feels. He never has been. He’s just learned how to hold it.

This is the King of Cups. And he has something to say to you about your writing life.

You don’t have to stop feeling everything. You just have to stop drowning in it.

Writers are, by nature, emotionally porous. We feel things more than we should. We absorb the energy of rooms we never entered. We grieve characters we invented. We wake at 3am hollowed out by a plot point we haven’t written yet. We feel the whole spectrum — the whole vast, unglamorous, frequently inconvenient spectrum — and we do it without armor, because armor is what stands between us and the work.

This is not a flaw. This is the gift.

But here’s what nobody talks about: the gift has a cost. And writers — especially the deeply-feeling kind — have a tendency to mistake being consumed by emotion for being connected to it. They sit in the flood and call it authenticity. They blow through every deadline in a spiral and call it process. They abandon projects mid-draft because the feelings got too big, and they call it a sign.

The King of Cups is not doing any of that.

He has felt everything. Every current, every undertow, every cold still pocket at the bottom of the dark water. He knows what lives down there. And he has learned — through time, through practice, through the particular wisdom that only comes from surviving your own depths — that feeling something fully does not require being undone by it.

He is the writer who can hold the grief of the character and still type the next sentence.

He is the writer who notices the spiral starting, puts one paw on the cup, and says quietly: I know you’re there. I’m not going anywhere. But we’re going to write the chapter first.

He is the writer who leads from emotion — whose best work is made of feeling — but who no longer lets the feeling make all the decisions.

The moon rises above him because he’s earned that kind of alignment. Not because he stopped feeling the dark. Because he learned to govern himself inside it.

  • Where in your creative life are you confusing emotional flooding with emotional depth?

  • What would it look like to feel the feeling — fully, really — and still keep the cup steady?

  • What does your King of Cups already know? The part of you that has survived every creative winter so far?

🌿 Today’s Practical Magick

The next time you feel yourself starting to spiral in the work — the doubt creeping in, the who am I to write this hum, the document staring back at you while you stare at the ceiling — try this before you close it:

Put one hand over your heart. Feel it there. Real, steady, still beating. And say quietly:

I feel this. I hold this. I write this.

Three beats. One breath each. The cup doesn’t spill. Neither do you. 🌙🐾
