Five of Wands — When Everything's Competing for the Wand

On creative friction, springtime chaos, and why you don’t have to win the fight to move forward.

🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers

Yesterday it was almost 90 degrees here in Wild, Wonderful West Virginia.

This morning I woke up to 52°F, a storm-battered yard, and the very real possibility of a snow flurry before dinnertime.

That’s not a weather report. That’s a tarot reading. 🙄🤪

Because I pulled the Five of Wands this morning, and honestly? The sky already did the interpretation for me.

The Five of Wands is one of those cards that looks more alarming than it is. Five figures. Five wands. What appears to be an absolute chaotic free-for-all of clashing energy and competing motion.

But here’s what people miss about this card:

Nobody’s bleeding.

No one is down. No one has lost. There are no wounds, no casualties, no tower crumbling in the background. What looks like a battle is actually something much more interesting — it’s creative friction. It’s five different ideas, five different impulses, five different directions all vying for the same airspace at the same time.

Sound familiar, writer?

Because here’s what the Five of Wands actually looks like in a creative life:

You sit down to work and suddenly everything wants attention simultaneously.

The chapter you’ve been avoiding. The new idea that arrived at 2am like an uninvited but extremely compelling houseguest. The project that’s been quietly gathering dust in the corner, giving you the eyes. The thing you should be doing versus the thing you’re burning to do versus the thing that has an actual deadline attached to it.

Five wands. All swinging. All real. All yours.

And the temptation — oh, the very human, very writer temptation — is to try to WIN. To grab all five wands and wrestle them into submission. To resolve the chaos by doing ALL of it, RIGHT NOW, with complete and total creative dominance.

We both know how that ends. 😂

The Five of Wands isn’t asking you to win the fight.

It’s asking you something much simpler and much harder:

Which wand do you actually want to hold today?

Not forever. Not as a declaration of creative identity or a binding contract with your muse. Just — today. This hour. This session.

One wand. Chosen consciously. Held with intention while the others do their chaotic little dance in the background.

Because here’s what the card knows that your panic spiral doesn’t: the other wands aren’t going anywhere. The ideas will still be there. The projects will wait. The 2am houseguest will still be sitting in your kitchen tomorrow, drinking your metaphorical coffee and wanting to talk plot structure.

You don’t have to resolve the creative chaos today.

You just have to pick one wand and move.

🌿 Three Questions to Sit With Today:

  • Which creative wand has been quietly calling the loudest — not the most urgent, not the most logical, but the one your gut keeps returning to?

  • Where have you been trying to win a creative battle that didn’t actually need to be won — just moved through?

  • What would it feel like to put down four of the wands, just for today, without guilt or apology?

🌿 Today’s Practical Magick

Next time you feel the Five of Wands energy — that scattered, everything-at-once, I-don’t-know-where-to-start hum — try this:

Write down every wand that’s currently swinging. Every project, every idea, every “I should be doing this.” Get them out of your head and onto paper where they can’t ambush you.

Then circle one.

Just one.

Put the list somewhere you can see it — so your brain knows the other wands are safe, they’re witnessed, they haven’t been abandoned — and then go work on the circled one.

That’s it. That’s the spell. 🔥🐾
