On blending instead of grinding — and why the steadiest magic moves at the pace of a single, unforced stream.

🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers

Temperance is the least dramatic card in the deck, and that’s exactly why writers need her.

In my version, she’s a winged bear standing on a rocky shore at sunset, tipping a single rose-pink pitcher full of stars and pouring that light — slow, steady, unhurried — straight down into the calm water below. She’s not pouring fast. She’s not spilling. She’s not racing the tide. She’s just letting one bright stream fall into the sea, where the small and the vast finally mix.

And here is what she knows about the writing life that most of us learn the hard way:

You do not have a writing problem. You have a pacing problem.

We binge. We grind. We wait for the flood of inspiration and then try to write a month’s worth of words in a feast-week, riding borrowed energy until our bodies — or our calendars, or our nervous systems — slam the door. Then comes the famine. The guilt. The “why can’t I just be consistent.” And then we wait for the next flood and do it all again.

Temperance puts a steady paw on the page and says: not like that, love.

You don’t have to pour faster. You have to pour steady.

Consistency was never about word count. It was never about the sprint. It’s about the single, unhurried stream — the session you can repeat tomorrow without paying for it in three days of collapse. A trickle that shows up every day will fill the sea. A flood that shows up once a month just floods.

And for those of us juggling more than one cup — more than one pen name, more than one project, a whole shelf of selves — Temperance is the patron saint of not spilling. You don’t pour everything into one cup until it overflows and the others run dry. You pour a little here, a little there. You alternate. You blend. You let the day have more than one color in it without drowning in any single one.

  • Where in your writing life have you been waiting for the flood — when the steady stream was available all along?

  • What would it feel like to pour from a full cup today instead of a forced one?

  • What two things are you trying to blend right now — and what would “steady, not frantic” actually look like?

🌿 Today’s Practical Magick

The next time the grind-voice spikes — write more, write faster, make up for lost time — try this before you pick up the pace:

Put both hands flat on your desk. One slow breath in. Name the one thing you’ll pour into today, and the one thing you’ll let rest. Then pour only that one steady stream, at a pace you could repeat tomorrow.

That’s the spell. One cup. One stream. No flood. 🫗🐾
