On staying steady when the waters are high — and why a still hand on the tiller is worth more than a thousand frantic ones.

🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers

The King of Cups is the most misunderstood of the watery royals.

People look at him and think the lesson is “control your emotions.” Lock them down. Be the unbothered one. Keep a stiff upper lip and never let them see you cry.

That is not it. That is not it at all.

Look closely at our King Bear. He is not a fortress. He wears a blue heart on his chest, right out in the open, on a golden chain — his feeling self is visible, worn proudly, not hidden behind armor. A crescent moon glows above his head like a crown, because intuition isn’t something he suppresses; it’s something he reigns by. And the sea behind him? It’s calm. Not because he commanded the ocean to be still — no one can do that — but because he has learned the one thing that actually matters:

The waves can be as high as they like. My job is simply to keep them out of the boat.

Here is what the King of Cups knows about the creative life:

Writers feel everything. We are porous by design. The same sensitivity that lets us write a grief so true a stranger weeps over it — that same sensitivity means a single cruel review, a flat sales day, a comparison spiral at 2am, can capsize us entirely. We don’t have thin skin. We have necessary skin. It’s the cost of the gift.

The King of Cups is not asking you to grow a thicker hide. He’s asking you to stop confusing the storm outside the boat with water inside the boat.

The disappointment can be real, and you can keep writing. The anxiety can be loud, and you can pour calmly into your work. The feeling is allowed full volume — it simply isn’t allowed to take the tiller.

And notice the flowers. All around him, things are blooming. That’s the quiet promise of emotional mastery: when you stop letting every wave swamp the boat, you have enough steadiness left over to tend things. The work grows. The roses come.

Reflective nudges for the writing life:

  • Where have you been treating a high wave outside the boat as though water were already pouring in?

  • What feeling have you been trying to lock in the hold, when the King would simply let it sit on the deck and keep sailing anyway?

  • What might bloom if you spent less energy bailing and more energy steering?

🌿 Today’s Practical Magick

The King’s element is water, so let’s make a spell out of the thing you’ll do a dozen times today anyway.

The next time you reach for your water glass, pause. Hold it for one breath. And say — out loud or just inside — “Steady captain. Calm seas.” Picture the high waves staying right where they belong: outside the boat. Then drink the spell down.

That’s it. Hydration and sovereignty in a single sip. The King would approve. 🐾💧
