Three of Cups — The Toast Before the Proof
On raising your cup before you have anything to celebrate yet — and why the light shows up anyway.
🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers
Look at what these three are doing. They are not toasting a finished book. They are not toasting a bestseller list, a fat royalty check, or a five-star review. They are three bears in purple robes, standing in a field at dusk, cups raised — and something answers them. A column of light splits the sky wide open, straight up from the tallest bear’s goblet, like the universe leaned down to clink glasses back.
Nobody in this card has proof yet. They just have each other, and their cups, and the nerve to lift them anyway.
That is the real message of the Three of Cups for a working writer: celebration doesn’t need to wait for completion.
We are so trained to withhold our own joy until the “real” milestone arrives — the launch day, the six-figure month, the moment someone else confirms we’re allowed to feel good. We treat celebration like a reward we haven’t earned yet instead of what it actually is: fuel.
These bears aren’t celebrating an outcome. They’re celebrating the company — the fact that they showed up, cups in paw, standing shoulder to shoulder in the dark, willing to raise a toast to something not yet finished.
You don’t need the proof to be allowed the joy.
Where in your creative life are you waiting for permission to celebrate something that’s already worth raising a cup to? A finished chapter. A hard scene you didn’t flinch away from. A single reader who told you your words mattered. A community — even a small one — that shows up with you in the dark.
Who is in your circle of cups right now — the people who’d raise a glass to your unfinished work?
What is one small thing from this week that deserves a toast, even if nobody else has noticed it yet?
Where have you been rationing your own joy, waiting for a “big enough” reason?
🌿 Today’s Practical Magick
Before you go looking for the next milestone to justify feeling good, try this instead:
Find something small and real from today. Hold up your actual cup — coffee, tea, water, whatever’s within reach. Say quietly: I haven’t finished the mountain. But I’m still allowed to toast the climb.
That’s it. That’s the spell. 🥂🐾
