Seven of Wands — Defending the Right to Rest
🐻 A Note Before We Begin
Before we step into today’s card, I want to say thank you — truly — for your patience and gentleness this past week.
My son and I have both been very sick with Flu-A, the kind that doesn’t just knock you down, but pins you there and asks you to reconsider everything you thought you knew about stamina, breath, and time. We’re on the mend now, slowly, unevenly, one cup of soup and one nap at a time.
Your grace while the den went quiet did not go unnoticed.
And today’s card?
It feels like it arrived because of that silence.
🪵 Seven of Wands
At first glance, the Seven of Wands is a card of battle.
A figure stands on higher ground, staff raised, fending off unseen challengers below. It’s usually read as defensiveness, competition, standing your ground, holding your position when you’re outnumbered.
But that interpretation assumes one thing that isn’t always true:
That the threat is external.
Today’s Seven of Wands showed up with a very different message.
🪶 Part 1: For the Writers
For writers — especially those rebuilding, healing, or creating from inside tender bodies — the Seven of Wands is not about fighting others.
It’s about defending yourself from urgency.
This card shows up when:
You feel pressure to “catch up” after illness, burnout, grief, or collapse
You hear the quiet voice saying “You’re falling behind” even while you’re doing your best
You try to rest, but your nervous system keeps scanning for what you should be doing
You measure your worth by output instead of integrity
You know pushing will hurt you… but stopping feels scary too
The Seven of Wands asks a hard, compassionate question:
What are you protecting — and from whom?
Because sometimes the thing you need to defend most fiercely is not your work, your time, or your reputation.
Sometimes you are defending your right to heal.
This is the card that says:
“You do not owe productivity while your body is rebuilding.”
“You do not have to justify rest.”
“You are allowed to say ‘not today’ without explaining yourself.”
The staff in the Seven of Wands is not a weapon today.
It’s a boundary post.
🌘 The Last Quarter Moon + Seven of Wands
Under a Last Quarter Moon, this card becomes even clearer.
This is the phase of:
Release
Fatigue
Truth without adrenaline
Letting old stories lose their grip
The Seven of Wands here isn’t fiery or triumphant.
It’s tired.
It’s honest.
It’s done performing strength.
It says:
“I have fought enough.
Now I choose preservation.”
For writers, this is sacred.
Because we are taught — explicitly or implicitly — that if we stop, we disappear.
This card disagrees.
🕯️ Today’s Practical Magick (Writer Edition)
If you do nothing else today, try this:
Place one hand on your chest.
Place the other on your belly.
Breathe in through your nose for 3.
Exhale through your mouth for 6.
Repeat five times.
Then say (out loud or quietly):
“I defend my healing.
I release urgency.
My work will wait for me — and I will return whole.”
That is Seven of Wands magick.
