Knight of Swords — The Bear Who Decided
On moving fast, moving with purpose, and what it actually looks like to charge toward the thing that matters.

The golden bear, his cloak streaming behind him like the sky itself is trying to keep up. White horse at full gallop, hooves barely skimming the earth. And that sword — raised not in rage, not in chaos, but aimed. Deliberate. Pointed directly at the brightest star in a cosmos that has lit up around him like a standing ovation.
This is the Knight of Swords.
And the first thing I want you to notice is his face.
He’s not panicked. He’s not grimacing. He’s not white-knuckling the reins and praying he survives the charge. He looks calm. Focused. Like a bear who made a decision somewhere back down the road and has simply been executing it ever since.
That’s the thing most people misunderstand about this card.
The Knight of Swords is not about frenzy. He’s not about burning yourself out in a blaze of frantic productivity. He’s not the card of doing everything at once until you collapse. He is the card of the decided. The one who looked at the target, raised the sword, and said — that one. I’m going toward that one. — and then stopped second-guessing and started moving.
Writers need this card more than almost anyone.
Because we are, many of us, magnificent at preparation. Extraordinary at research. Absolutely elite-level at getting everything almost ready. We outline and revise the outline and reconsider the outline. We set up the perfect writing environment and then reorganize it. We think about the chapter before we write the chapter. We even think about thinking about it.
The Knight of Swords is not impressed by preparation that never becomes motion.
He’s not cruel about it — look at his face, there’s no contempt there. He simply doesn’t understand why you’re still standing on the ground when there’s a star with your name on it up there in the sky.
“What are you waiting for?” he asks, genuinely curious. “You already know which direction you’re going. You already know what matters in your heart. So — go.”
Here’s what this card is really asking you today:
What have you already decided — but haven’t fully committed your motion to yet?
Not what are you thinking about starting. Not what would you do if conditions were perfect. What have you already decided, somewhere in your bones, that you keep circling instead of charging toward?
The Knight doesn’t wait for perfect conditions. Look at that sky — it’s dramatic, cosmic, swirling with something enormous. He’s not waiting for it to calm down. He’s riding through it, sword raised, because the star is up there regardless of what the atmosphere is doing.
Your story doesn’t need perfect conditions. Your Substack doesn’t need perfect conditions. Your next chapter, your next submission, your next brave creative act — none of it needs the sky to stop swirling first.
The Knight needs three things from you today:
One clear target. Not seventeen. One. What is the most important thing your creative self needs you to move toward today?
One decisive action. Not a plan about the action. The action itself. Even a small one. Raise the sword. Point it at the star. Take three steps in that direction.
The willingness to look calm while doing it. This one’s subtle but it matters. The Knight’s composure isn’t performance — it’s the byproduct of genuine decision. When you stop fighting yourself about whether to move, the movement itself becomes easier. Calmer. More powerful.
You don’t have to gallop at full speed. You just have to be decided.
The star isn’t going anywhere. But it does tend to get brighter the closer you ride toward it. 🌟⚔️🐾
