Queen of Cups — She Holds the Cup
On emotional sovereignty, tending yourself first, and the radical act of not spilling.
🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers
Look at her — She’s not standing. She’s not performing. She’s not rushing toward anything or explaining herself to anyone.
She’s sitting at the edge of the water — ocean behind her, flowers all around her, crescent moon glowing above — and she is holding her cup in both hands like it contains something precious.
Because it does.
The Queen of Cups is the emotional sovereign of the tarot. And I want to be careful here, because she is often described in ways that make her sound soft. Gentle. Passive. Intuitive. Which is true — but it misses the most important thing about her.
She is not gentle because she is weak. She is gentle because she has chosen it. Deliberately. After learning — probably the hard way — what happens when she isn’t.
She has felt everything. She feels things deeply, probably more deeply than the people around her fully understand. And somewhere along the way, she made a decision: I will not let what I feel destroy what I’m building.
That is not suppression. That is sovereignty.
For writers, the Queen of Cups usually shows up at very specific moments.
Not during the storm. Not during the crisis. But in the aftermath — when the hard thing has passed, when the body is still recalibrating, when the nervous system is trying to remember what normal feels like — and there’s this pull to either collapse completely or sprint to make up for lost time.
The Queen of Cups sits down in the flowers and holds her cup and says: neither.
She knows something that writers who push through everything often forget:
You cannot pour from a cup you’ve never learned to hold.
Not fill. Not overflow. Just — hold. Steadily. With both hands. Without apologizing for needing to keep something for yourself.
Here’s what she’s asking you today:
Where have you been pouring out without replenishing?
What would it look like to tend yourself with the same devotion you give your characters, your readers, your deadlines?
What’s in your cup right now — and is it actually what you chose to put there, or what accumulated when you weren’t looking?
🌿 Today’s Practical Magick
Hold your next cup of something warm in both hands before you drink it. Just for a moment. Feel the weight of it. The warmth.
That pause? That’s the Queen’s whole teaching. Right there.
Hold the cup. Know what’s in it. Choose when to pour. 🐾☕
