On grief that glows, what remains standing, and why the bear hasn’t looked behind her yet.

🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers

Look at her. She’s on an ancient cobblestone path — the kind that’s been walked so many times by so many paws that the stones have worn smooth, shaped by the weight of everyone who came before her. The sky above is a deep, infinite twilight blue, scattered with stars that don’t care at all about what happened down here. Pink-magenta clouds drift overhead like the universe is having its own quiet feelings about the whole thing.

And she is bent over three spilled cups.

The cups are gold. Beautiful, actually. And what poured out of them — that glowing cyan-blue light, luminous and strange and somehow more beautiful for being lost — pools on the stone path between her paws. It’s not water. It never was. Whatever was in those cups was luminous. Was alive. Was worth grieving.

So, she’s grieving it.

Eyes down. Crimson cloak wrapped around her like armor that forgot it was armor. She is not dramatic about this. She is not performing. She is simply — and completely — here with what was lost.

Here’s what most people don’t talk about with the Five of Cups:

The grief is real. The loss actually happened. And the thing that was lost was genuinely, beautifully worth mourning.

We rush past this part. We want to skip ahead to the “but look what’s still standing!” lesson — the two upright cups glowing warm gold and rose behind her, the ones she hasn’t seen yet. We want to shortcut through the grief to the wisdom.

But the card doesn’t let you.

The bear hasn’t turned around yet. And she’s not supposed to. Not yet.

This is the part where most writing advice fails writers in grief. We get told — feel the feelings, then move on. Process, then produce. Mourn, then create.

As if grief runs on a schedule. As if the heart has a to-do list.

The Five of Cups knows better. It shows us a bear standing in the middle of her own loss, under an infinite sky, on a path that others have walked before her, and it does not rush her. It does not tap her on the shoulder. It does not point to the cups behind her and say but look!

It just — witnesses her. Right where she is.

And here’s the thing about that glowing spilled light on the stones:

Grief that glows is not wasted grief. Something that luminous was worth carrying. You don’t mourn things that didn’t matter. The cyan light on the cobblestones is proof of how real it was.

  • What have you been grieving that you’ve been trying to rush past?

  • What loss in your creative life deserved — and maybe still deserves — to be stood over for a moment?

  • What was in your spilled cup that was worth the light it carried?

🌿 Today’s Practical Magick

The next time you catch yourself trying to “get over it faster” — whatever it is — try this:

Put one hand over your heart. Look at whatever the spilled cup was. And say quietly: “That was real. That mattered. I’m allowed to stand here for a moment.”

Just a moment. The cups behind you aren’t going anywhere. They’ll be glowing when you’re ready to turn around. 🐾
