On receiving what you cannot pour for yourself — and why open hands are an act of radical courage.

🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers

The Ace of Cups does not arrive when you are full.

I need you to sit with that for a second, because everything you’ve probably heard about this card says otherwise. New emotional beginnings. Overflowing love. Creative abundance. The cup runneth over.

And yes. Eventually. But that is not necessarily when the Ace of Cups shows up.

The Ace of Cups shows up when you are kneeling on bare rock at the edge of a long, hard stretch of something — exhausted, a little wrung out, the horizon behind you more turbulent than you’d like to admit — and the cup appears not because you are full, but because you have finally, finally gotten your hands open enough to receive something.

Look at this bear. She is not standing triumphantly. She is not striding forward with the cup already in her grip. She is kneeling. On rock. At dusk, or dawn — that liminal blue hour when you genuinely cannot tell if the light is ending or beginning. Her paws are open and upturned. The cup hovers just above her reach, pouring gold light into the stars.

She is receiving. Not taking. Not earning. Not performing her worthiness. Receiving.

That is the hardest thing for writers to do.

We are extraordinarily good at output. We pour. We produce. We give our interior worlds to the page and to our readers and to every person who needs something from us on any given Tuesday. We fill other cups constantly — our characters, our readers, our communities, our families, the people who depend on us to keep the lights on in every sense of the phrase.

And then we wonder why we feel like there’s nothing left.

The Ace of Cups is not asking you to generate more feeling today. It is asking you something far more uncomfortable:

What would it look like to let something be given to you?

Not earned. Not hustled for. Not extracted through sheer force of will. Given. Offered. Received with open paws on bare rock in the blue hour when you’re not sure if the day is beginning or ending.

This is where most of us freeze.

Because receiving requires a particular kind of vulnerability that output never does. When you’re giving, you’re in control. When you’re receiving — truly receiving, paws open, not grasping — you have to trust that the cup won’t be snatched away. That you’re allowed to have it. That you don’t have to justify why you deserve it before it lands.

Writers with deep wells of self-sufficiency — the ones who learned early that help wasn’t reliably coming so they’d better figure it out themselves — often have the most trouble here. Open hands feel dangerous. Waiting feels like weakness. Receiving feels like exposure.

But look at her face.

She is not afraid. She is awed.

That is the invitation today. Not to manufacture feelings you don’t have, not to perform emotional openness you’re not ready for — but to consider, just for today, what it might mean to turn your paws upward instead of clenched.

  • What is trying to reach you that you keep almost-grabbing at, almost-blocking, almost-missing because you’re too busy trying to be the one doing the pouring?

  • What might flow in, if you just got still enough to let it?

🌿 Today’s Practical Magick

Find one moment today — just one — where instead of solving, fixing, producing, or giving, you simply receive something. Let someone’s kindness land without deflecting it. Sit outside for five minutes and let the warmth of an 85-degree April afternoon just... soak in. Hold your coffee with both hands and let it warm you without doing anything else simultaneously.

Open paws. Just for a moment.

That’s the spell. 🌟🐾
