This is that space. But before I hand you the story, let’s talk about the thing resilience actually is, because it’s almost never what we’ve been told.

Subscribe now

Resilience Isn’t a Thicker Skin

We talk about resilience like it’s armor — like the goal is to eventually stop feeling the sting of a bad review, a rejection, a comparison spiral at 11pm scrolling someone else’s launch numbers. I want to gently push back on that, because I don’t think that’s actually true, and I don’t think it’s even the goal worth spending your finite energy chasing.

I’ve been doing this writing thing a long time. I’ve also survived decades of things that taught my nervous system how to keep functioning under real pressure and threat. And I still feel the sting. A hard review still lands. A comparison thought can still creep in on a tired day. Resilience didn’t remove the sting for me. It changed what I do with it once it arrives.

That’s the whole pillar, actually. Resilience isn’t about becoming numb. It’s about becoming quick to recover — and recovery has a shape you can actually learn.

Share

The Two Voices You’ll Hear After Hard Feedback

Here’s something I’ve noticed, in myself and in every writer I’ve ever talked honestly with about this: after a piece of hard feedback lands, two different voices show up, almost at the same time, and they sound nearly identical at first.

Voice one is shame. It says you’re not good enough. You never should have published this. Everyone can see it now. Shame is loud, it’s global, and it’s almost never actually useful — it’s not trying to help you write better, it’s trying to make you small enough to stop being seen at all.

Voice two is instinct. It’s quieter. It doesn’t attack your worth — it points, calmly, at something specific. Something didn’t fit here. You already half-knew, didn’t you? Instinct isn’t cruel. It’s just honest, and it arrives at almost the same moment as shame, which is exactly why the two get tangled together and mistaken for the same voice. And also why — many times — instinct will get written off instead of leaned into.

The skill of resilience is learning to separate them. Shame gets thanked for showing up and then firmly shown the door. Instinct gets a chair at the table, because instinct is the only one of the two that actually has something worth telling you.

Think of the last time hard feedback landed on your work:

Can you separate what was shame — global, cruel, unspecific — from what might have actually been your own instinct, quietly confirming something you already suspected?

Where has comparison to another writer’s path cost you more than it ever taught you?

What would it feel like to let feedback change your next project instead of demanding it invalidate the one you already finished?

🔒 My own recent “instinct already knew” story — and the pressure-valve discovery that came out of it — is below for paid subscribers. (Psst — this is also exactly the material I’ll be teaching live in our very first Tech-with-Soul workshop on August 3rd, included free with your subscription. And they are not the same thing, even though they get treated like the same thing constantly.

Subscribe now

Burnout Doesn’t Care About Your Outline

Here’s the thing nobody tells you about burnout: it doesn’t just steal your time or your energy. It steals your relationship to the work.

You can have a fully outlined book, characters you love, a deadline you set yourself — and still sit down and feel absolutely nothing. Not resistance, exactly. Just... static. A dead engine that used to purr.

And the advice the internet hands you in that moment is almost always some version of “just start, momentum builds momentum, get back on the horse.” Which, respectfully, is advice built for someone whose engine is merely cold — not someone whose engine burned out entirely and is currently sitting in a ditch somewhere with smoke coming out of the hood.

Those are different repair jobs.

A cold engine needs a turn of the key.

A burned-out one needs you to actually get out, pop the hood, and see what’s wrong before you try to drive anywhere.

Share

The Difference Between Resting and Restarting

This is the pillar people skip past, because resting feels like the “acceptable” thing to talk about and restarting feels like the scary unknown after it. But here’s what I’ve learned: rest doesn’t automatically turn into restart. You can rest for months and still not know how to find your way back in, because resting and restarting are two entirely different skills.

Rest is stopping the bleeding. Restart is relearning how to walk.

And the walking-again phase needs something most burnout advice completely skips: permission to be bad at it for a while. Permission to write badly. Permission to not recognize your own voice on the page at first. Permission for the return to feel clumsy and foreign, because it will — and that clumsiness is not proof you’ve lost it. It’s proof you’re using a muscle that’s been resting, which is exactly what muscles that have been resting do.

Where have you been treating “I’m not ready yet” as a character flaw instead of an honest, valid stage of recovery?

What would it look like to expect the first attempts back to be clumsy — and let that be okay instead of alarming?

If you didn’t have to be “good” at writing again immediately, what’s the smallest possible way you could touch the work today?

🔒 The personal story, the exercise, and this week’s easy-tech ease-bringer are below — for paid subscribers. willpower runs out.

Somewhere along the way, we all absorbed the same lie about consistency: that it’s a character trait. That some writers just have it — steady, reliable, gold-star-sticker types who never miss a day — and the rest of us are simply too undisciplined, too scattered, too much to ever be one of them.

I believed that lie for years. I want to gently take it away from you today.

Subscribe now

Discipline Was Never the Missing Ingredient

Here’s what I’ve learned the hard way, more than once: forcing yourself to be consistent through sheer willpower works right up until it doesn’t — and then it doesn’t work spectacularly. You white-knuckle a streak. You feel proud. You feel like you’ve finally “fixed” yourself. And then life does what life does — illness, a bad week, a schedule earthquake — and the streak breaks, and suddenly it doesn’t just feel like a missed day. It feels like proof you were never really a “real” writer to begin with.

That’s not a discipline problem. That’s a design problem.

Willpower is a finite resource. It runs on decision-making energy, and every single day you’re already spending that energy on a hundred invisible things before you ever sit down to write — work, family, health, the general exhausting task of being a person in the world right now. Treating consistency like something you white-knuckle through sets you up to fail the moment your tank runs low, which for most of us is... often.

Ritual doesn’t run on willpower. Ritual runs on cue.

Share

What Ritual Actually Means (No Candles Required)

I want to be really clear about something, because “ritual” is a word that can send certain brains running for the hills — especially if you’ve been burned by advice that assumed you had unlimited time, spoons, and a Pinterest-worthy writing nook waiting for you every morning.

A ritual, in the way I mean it, is just this: a small, repeatable cue that tells your brain “this is the writing thing now.” That’s it. It doesn’t need incense. It doesn’t need an hour. It needs to be small enough that you’ll actually do it on the bad days, not just the good ones — because the bad days are exactly when you need it most.

The magic isn’t in the ritual itself. It’s in the fact that it’s the same small thing every time, so your brain stops negotiating and starts recognizing.

Some real, unglamorous examples:

The same playlist, every single writing session, no exceptions

Re-reading your last paragraph before you write the next one

One specific mug, used only for writing time

Opening the document and typing today’s date before anything else

None of these require discipline. They require repetition. And repetition, unlike willpower, doesn’t run out.

Where has “just try harder” quietly failed you, over and over, in a way that was never actually your fault?

What’s one tiny, repeatable cue — not a whole routine, just one small thing — that could tell your brain “we’re writing now”?

If you stopped trying to build a system and just tried to build a doorway, what would that doorway look like?

🔒 The personal story, the exercise, and this week’s easy-tech ease-bringer are below — for paid subscribers.

to build a process that fits your actual brain.

Last time, we found your True North — the why underneath the writing. If you’re just joining us, go back and start there, because everything we build now sits on that foundation. 🧭

Today we build the how.

And I want to open with the single most freeing sentence I can offer you, so let’s just get it on the table right away:

There is no such thing as the “right” writing process. There is only the process that fits the writer you actually are.

I know. I know. It sounds too simple to be true, and it flies in the face of roughly nine thousand blog posts insisting that Real Writers™ write every single day, preferably at dawn, preferably 2,000 words, preferably in a tidy little ritual with a scented candle and a color-coded outline.

Let me tell you what that advice did for me for years: it made me feel broken.

Subscribe now

The Lie That Was Quietly Wrecking You

Here’s the trap, and I fell all the way into it. The productivity advice we absorb isn’t neutral — it’s built almost entirely by and for a specific kind of brain. The linear, consistent, same-time-every-day kind. The kind that finds a routine, clicks into it, and runs.

And if that’s your brain — wonderful! Genuinely. Go forth and dawn-write.

But a lot of us — the neurodivergent, the ADHD, the trauma-carrying, the chronically-ill, the sensitive — do not have that brain. We have brains that write in bursts. Brains that need novelty. Brains that can hyperfocus for four glorious hours and then need three days to recover. Brains that do their best plotting in the shower and their best drafting at 11pm and absolutely nothing useful at 5am no matter how many alarms we set.

And when a burst-happy-brain tries to force itself into a metronome-brain’s process, here’s what happens: it fails, feels ashamed, calls itself lazy or undisciplined, and slowly starts believing it’s not a real writer.

You are not undisciplined. You’ve been handed the wrong instruction manual. 📖

Share

Process Is a Framework, Not a Rulebook

This is where I part ways — again — with the guru model. 🤣 I’m not going to tell you my process and call it the answer. My process is mine; it’s shaped like my brain, my body, my chronic pain, my ADHD, my life. Yours will be shaped like yours.

What I can give you is the framework for building your own — and permission to let it change. Because here’s the second freeing truth: the process that works for you this season may not work next season, and that’s not a flaw in you. That’s just being a living human whose life keeps moving.

A process is a tool, not a vow. When it stops fitting, you’re allowed to set it down and build a new one.

If you’re building a house and the hammer breaks, you don’t shame the hammer and quit — you get a new hammer and keep going.

(well, you might swear at it for a few minutes first… but that doesn’t count! LOL) 🤪🤣

No shame, no starting-over guilt. Just gentle re-tooling.

The writers who last aren’t the ones with the most rigid discipline. They’re the ones who learned to notice how they actually work — and then stopped fighting it.

Below the line: the story of how I finally stopped forcing a process that was never built for my brain (and the burnt-out season that made me figure it out), plus the actual exercise for mapping YOUR real process, the one easy-tech trick that makes it effortless to follow, and your prompts. That part’s for the folks building the whole framework with me. 🐾

home.

Let me start with a confession, because that’s how we do things around here.

For years, I thought the reason I wasn’t writing consistently was that I lacked discipline. That there was some sturdier, more serious writer-self I was supposed to become — one who woke at 5am, hit her word count without complaint, and never once got derailed by a shiny idea or a bad fibro day or the sudden, urgent need to reorganize an entire kitchen cabinet. I thought if I could just force myself into that shape, the writing would flow.

So, I tried. Over and over. I downloaded the apps. I made the color-coded schedules. I set the alarms with the motivational labels. And every single time, within a week or three, the whole scaffold collapsed — and I’d sit in the rubble telling myself the oldest, meanest story there is: See? You’re just not disciplined enough. Other writers can do this. What’s wrong with you?

Here is what I know now, after a lot of collapsed scaffolds and a lot of hard-won healing:

Nothing was wrong with me. I was building on the wrong foundation and for a brain that wasn’t mine.

I was starting with discipline — with how much and how often and by when — when I hadn’t yet answered the only question that actually holds a writing life up.

Not how. Not how much.

Why.

Share

What “True North” Actually Means (and What It Doesn’t)

When people say “find your why,” it usually comes out sounding like a motivational poster — vague, a little preachy, the kind of thing that makes those of us with a healthy suspicion of hustle-culture want to quietly close the tab.

So let me make it real and unglamorous, the way I like things.

Your True North isn’t your genre. It isn’t your five-year plan or your sales goal or the number of books you want on the shelf. Those are destinations — and destinations change.

(Mine have changed about nine times, and I stopped apologizing for it.) 🤣

Your True North is the deeper reason the writing matters to you — the thing underneath the thing. It’s the answer to: when the writing is going well, what is it actually giving me? And when I’m not writing, what specifically am I missing?

For one writer, it’s “I write to make sense of what happened to me.” For another, it’s “I write because building whole worlds is the only place I feel truly free.” For another, it’s “I write because there’s a reader out there who needs this exact story, and I’m the only one who can tell it.”

None of those is more correct than the others. That’s the whole point — and it’s the first place I part ways with most of the writing-advice internet.

Subscribe now

Why I Don’t Teach This as “Gospel”

I need to be honest with you about who I am as your guide, because it shapes everything I’m going to share across these twelve pillars.

I am not a guru. 🐻

I’m a fully-flawed, actively-healing life survivalist who has learned most of what she knows the hard way, and who believes — down to the bone — that what works beautifully for one writer can be completely useless for another. I’ve watched brilliant, sensitive, creative people break themselves against systems that were never built for their brain, their body, their nervous system, their life — and then blame themselves when the borrowed system didn’t fit.

So, I’m not going to hand you my True North and tell you to adopt it. And I’m not even going to pretend that the True North you find today is the one you’ll have forever.

Here’s the truest thing I can tell you about a sustainable writing life: what works for you right now may not work for you in six months — and that isn’t failure. That’s just being a living, changing human.

The goal was never to find the One Perfect System and lock yourself inside it. The goal is to learn the framework for building your own — and to give yourself full permission to rebuild it, gently, as many times as your one wild life requires.

That’s what these twelve pillars are. Not a cage. A compass. You’re still the one walking. 🧭

🔏 This is where it gets real. Below, I’m going to tell you the whole story of the years I lost my own True North completely — the season I quietly learned it wasn’t safe to write at all — and how I found my way back. Then we get practical: the exercise for finding your own North, the one small piece of tech that makes it stick, and your prompts. That part’s for the folks walking the whole framework with me. 🐾

You counted the decisions in the doorway. You started clearing them, one careful variable at a time. Maybe you’ve even found a rhythm that’s begun to fit — a time, a place, a small cue that quietly tells your brain we write now.

So let me tell you the one thing every honest writing coach should say out loud and almost none do:

It’s going to break.

Share

Not might. Will. A flu will flatten you for a week. A health-flare will steal your spoons. A kid, a crisis, a deadline at the day job, a season of grief or change or sheer exhaustion will come along and knock your lovely new routine clean over. This isn’t pessimism, love — it’s just life, behaving exactly like life.

And here’s the part that matters: the disruption is almost never what kills a routine. What kills it is what we make the disruption mean.

A broken routine is not a broken you. It’s a routine meeting real life — which is the only place routines have ever had to live.

You know the spiral, because we’ve all ridden it. You miss a day. Then two. Then a week, because you were sick or slammed or simply done. And somewhere in there a cruel little voice starts up: See? You fell off. You ruined it. You don’t have what it takes. You’re back to square one. And so — to escape the shame of the broken thing — you abandon the whole thing entirely.

Subscribe now

The routine didn’t fail you there. The shame did. The disruption was survivable. The story you told about the disruption is what burned the house down.

So let’s troubleshoot like scientists instead of sentencing ourselves like judges. When your rhythm falls apart, there are really only two questions to ask — and they lead to two very different, equally kind, answers.

Question one: did life interrupt it — or did it stop fitting?

Sometimes a routine that still fits you perfectly simply got interrupted. You weren’t writing because you had a 102° fever, not because the rhythm was wrong. In that case, there’s nothing to rebuild. The shoes still fit; you just couldn’t wear them for a bit. You don’t need a whole new system — you need permission to return, gently, exactly where you left off.

And the kindest way back is what I call your minimum viable ritual — the tiny floor version of your routine for days when capacity is in the basement. Not your full session. Just enough to keep the thread unbroken: re-read one page. Write one sentence. Sit in the chair and do nothing else. It sounds almost too small to count — and that is precisely why it works. It tells your nervous system we’re still a writer; we never stopped, without demanding energy you don’t have. The thread stays whole. And an unbroken thread is so much easier to pick back up than a severed one.

The other possibility is that the break is actually information. The routine didn’t just get interrupted — it stopped fitting, because you changed again. (You will keep changing. That’s not a flaw in the plan; it is the plan.) And if that’s what happened, you already know exactly what to do, because you learned it in this very series: set the old shoes by the door without shame, and run another small experiment. One variable at a time. You are never back at square one — you’re a scientist with a whole notebook of data now.

The secret to a routine that lasts: let it bend.

Here’s the truth the hustle crowd will never tell you, because it doesn’t sell as well as “never miss a day”: the most durable routines in the world are not the rigid ones. The rigid ones snap. A routine built with zero give — one perfect way, performed perfectly, or else it’s “ruined” — is a routine engineered to shatter the first time real life leans on it.

The routines that last are the ones built to flex. The ones with a full version and a minimum version. The ones you’re allowed to re-fit when the season turns. The ones that treat a missed day as a Tuesday, not a verdict.

So I want to give you the permission slip I wish someone had handed me years ago: you are allowed to outgrow this routine, too. The rhythm that fits the writer you are right now will not be the one that fits the writer you become — and when that day arrives, it will not mean you failed. It will mean, just like it did at the very beginning of this series, that you grew.

Which brings us all the way back around to where we started, in our first letter together:

It’s a fitting. Not a failure.

Share

That was true of the old routine you outgrew. It’s true of the one you’re building now. And it will be true of the next one, and the one after that — for as long as you keep growing, which I dearly hope is for the rest of your beautiful, creative life. 🐾

You don’t need more willpower, my dear. You never did. You needed permission, a method, and a rhythm gentle enough to survive being human. Now you have all three.

Go be a writer. The kind, real, sustainable kind. The shoes are yours to choose. 💜

If this little series met you where you are, I’d genuinely love to know: hit reply and tell me the one variable you’re testing. Count the little choices standing between you and the page — now or later, here or there, this project or that one, am I even in the mood — without changing a single one.

Did you feel how many there were? Most writers are quietly stunned. There’s a whole obstacle course between the chair and the work, and we’ve been blaming ourselves for being tired at the finish line.

So today we start clearing it. And I want to be very clear about how, because the way most of us try to fix a broken routine is the exact thing that guarantees it’ll break again.

Here’s the trap. We hit a stretch where the writing won’t come, we feel the panic rising, and we decide that this is the week we “Fix Everything”. We’re going to wake at 5am, write a thousand words before coffee, journal, meditate, hit our step count, and become an entirely new disciplined person — starting Monday. We build a gorgeous, towering, perfect routine in our heads…

…and it collapses by Wednesday. Every single time.

An overhaul gives you a beautiful plan and terrible data. You can’t learn anything from a system that changes everything at once.

Subscribe now

There are two reasons it fails, and neither of them is that you’re lazy or weak.

The first is simply that it’s too much. A tired, anxious nervous system reads “blow up your entire life on Monday” as a threat, not a gift — and it will pump the brakes to protect you, every time. You’re not failing the overhaul. Your body is refusing an unsafe demand. That’s wisdom, not weakness.

The second reason is the nerdy one, and it’s my favorite: even if the overhaul worked, you’d have no idea why. If you change ten things at once and the writing flows, which one did it? The early hour? The new spot? The candle? The order you did things in? You can’t know. And so the next time it breaks, you’re back to guessing in the dark, blowing it all up again. A perfect routine you don’t understand is a routine you can’t rebuild when life inevitably knocks it over.

So we’re not going to overhaul anything. We’re going to run experiments. One variable at a time. Like a good — and very kind — scientist.

Share

The method: change one thing. Watch what happens. Keep what helps.

It’s almost embarrassingly simple, and that’s the point. Pick one small thing from your obstacle course. Just one. Change it. Run it for a few days — not forever, just long enough to feel it. Then notice, honestly: did the page get easier to reach, or didn’t it? Keep what helped. Quietly release what didn’t. Then, only then, pick your next variable.

Here are some single variables you might test, each one tiny on its own:

Time. Same writing window, three days running. Not the “right” time the gurus swear by — your time. After supper. During the lunch hour. The quiet before everyone wakes.

Place. One consistent spot. The same chair, the same corner, even the same café. Let your brain learn this is where we write.

A single starting cue. One small ritual that signals “we’re beginning” — lighting a candle, the same three songs, one slow breath, a particular mug. (You already know I’m partial to a warm cup of something. ☕)

Removing one decision. Decide tonight what you’ll work on tomorrow, so morning-you doesn’t have to. That’s one whole choice lifted out of the doorway before you even arrive.

Duration — and make it almost laughably small. Ten minutes. Even five. Small enough that the resistance can’t get a grip. You can always keep going; you just have to start.

The first action. Try re-reading your last page before writing anything new, so you slip back into the world instead of staring down a blank one.

Pick one. Resist — I see you, overachiever bear 🐻 — the urge to grab three.

And here is the gentlest, most important part of the whole method:

There are no failed experiments. There is only data.

Subscribe now

If you test a variable and it doesn’t help, you have not failed. You have ruled something out — and that is genuine progress, the same way a scientist crossing a wrong answer off the list is one step closer to the right one. “Mornings don’t work for me” isn’t a confession of inadequacy. It’s a finding. Write it down with something close to pride, because now you know, and knowing is how you build something that lasts.

So this week, your assignment is just slightly bigger than last week’s, and still beautifully small:

Pick one variable. Test it for a few days. Notice what happens. That’s the whole thing. One change, gently observed. You’re not committing to it forever — you’re just gathering one clean piece of data about the writer you are now.

Next time, we finish strong — because there’s one thing I can promise you about even the most perfectly fitted routine: life is going to break it. A flare, a crisis, a sick week, a season that takes more than it gives. So in our final letter, we’ll talk about what to do when your lovely new rhythm falls apart — how to troubleshoot it, how to return without shame, and how to make a routine that actually lasts by letting it bend.

Be a kind scientist this week, love. We agreed — gently, with our whole hearts — that a routine which no longer fits isn’t a verdict on your worth. It’s just data. A fitting, not a failure.

But I left you with a promise, and I keep my promises (even when it takes me a fresh cup of something to do it): I told you we’d talk about why a good routine isn’t the enemy of your creativity. Why structure and spontaneity, far from being rivals, are actually on the same team.

So, pour something warm, settle in, and let me show you the good kind of nerdy. 🐻

There’s a romantic myth a lot of us absorbed somewhere along the way — that creativity is a wild, untamed lightning bolt, and that structure is the cage that would only kill it. That real artists wait for the muse. That planning is for accountants, and any writer worth her salt simply feels the magic and lets it pour out.

It’s a gorgeous story. It’s also, mostly, untrue — and I think it’s quietly broken more writers than it’s ever helped.

Here’s what’s actually going on under the hood.

Your brain has a strict budget. Routine is how you stop spending it on the wrong things.

Subscribe now

Every single day, you wake up with a finite amount of mental energy. Not infinite. Finite. And your brain spends it on everything — what to wear, what to eat, the seventeen small decisions before you’ve even had coffee, the worry humming in the background, the logistics of an ordinary life. By the time you sit down to write, you may already be running on fumes, wondering why the words feel like dragging a piano uphill.

Now here’s the part that changes everything: deciding is one of the most expensive things your brain does. When you sit down with no set time, no clear cue, no established rhythm, you don’t just have to write — first you have to decide whether to write, when, where, for how long, what to work on, and whether you’re even in the mood. Every one of those decisions quietly taxes the exact same mental account you need for the actual creative work.

A routine pays all of those bills in advance.

When the time, the place, and the on-ramp are already decided — already automatic — your brain stops burning fuel on logistics and hands the whole budget to the thing that matters: the story.

This is why so many beloved, wildly imaginative writers were ferociously routined. Maya Angelou kept a spare little room where she arrived early each morning to write. Twyla Tharp began every single day with the same unbreakable ritual before she ever danced a step. These weren’t rigid people strangling their art. They were artists who’d figured out that the ritual was the thing that protected the magic — that handled the boring decisions so the imagination didn’t have to.

Structure doesn’t compete with inspiration. It clears the runway for it.

Share

There’s a second piece of this, and it’s just as kind.

You know that elusive state where the words finally start to flow — where you look up and an hour has vanished and you’re in it? That’s not an accident, and it’s not pure luck. Your brain reaches that focused, absorbed state far more easily when it has a reliable signal that says we’re writing now. A consistent cue — the same chair, the same candle, the same first small action — becomes a doorway your nervous system learns to walk through. Do it enough times and the routine itself starts to summon the focus, instead of you having to manufacture it from scratch every single time.

And here’s the one that surprises people most: a little bit of constraint tends to make us more creative, not less. A blank, boundless “write whenever, however, about anything” is paralyzing — there’s nothing to push against. But a container — this half hour, this scene, this chair — gives your imagination edges to spark off of. Limits aren’t the opposite of creativity. Very often, they’re the spark plug.

So when the hustle-culture crowd tells you that needing a routine means you’re not a real creative — that the gifted ones just feel it and go — I want you to remember what’s actually happening in the brain of every working writer who’s ever finished anything:

They weren’t more disciplined than you. They weren’t more gifted. They’d simply stopped asking their tired, overspent brain to make a hundred little decisions before breakfast — and handed it the one decision that mattered.

That’s not a cage, love. That’s a doorway. And you’re allowed to build one that fits you.

So — how do you build it without burning your whole life down to do it? That’s exactly where we’re headed next: the gentle, patient, one-variable-at-a-time method for finding the rhythm that fits the writer you actually are now. No overhaul. No 5am gospel. Just small, kind experiments — the way a good scientist would.

For today, your assignment is a tiny one, and it’s pure observation — no fixing required:

Notice the decisions. Just for a day or two, pay attention to how many little choices stand between you and the page. Should I write now or after this one thing? Here or there? This project or that one? Am I even in the mood? Don’t change a single thing yet. Just count them. Because next time, we start clearing them out of your way — one at a time.

You don’t need more willpower, my dear. You need fewer things standing in the doorway.

We’ll start moving them next time. 🐻

With warmth (and a fresh cup of something),
Stacy
aka Mojo Mama Bear 💜

Authors Mojo + Rewilding Dispatch - Stacy @Authors Mojo is a reader-supported publication. that’s information, not failure.

There’s a particular kind of quiet ache that doesn’t get talked about much.

It’s the morning you sit down to write — same chair, same coffee, the same playlist that used to drop you straight into the work — and… nothing. The words don’t come the way they used to. The ritual that was once a doorway now feels like a locked room you’re standing outside of, jiggling the handle, wondering what on earth is wrong with you.

If that’s where you are right now, I want to say something to you before anything else, plainly and with my whole heart:

Nothing is wrong with you.

I know that’s hard to believe at 7am with a blinking cursor and a head full of I should be further along by now. But stay with me, because there’s a reframe here that changes everything — and it has nothing to do with discipline, willpower, or how badly you want it.

Here’s the thing almost nobody tells you about a writing routine: it isn’t a permanent fixture. It’s a fit. And fit changes — because you change.

Your routine didn’t fail you. You grew, and the old fit didn’t grow with you.

Share

Sometimes you change slowly, the way everyone does. The kids who used to nap while you wrote are teenagers now. Your body keeps different hours than it did at thirty. The job shifted, the house shifted, the season of life turned the way seasons do. The routine that fit that writer was never going to fit this one forever.

And sometimes you change all at once. A hard season arrives — illness, loss, a relationship that cracked open, a year that took much more than it gave — and the person who finally sits back down at the desk afterward is simply not the same person who built that old routine. I’ve lived that one myself. I know the particular grief of reaching for a creative self that used to come so easily, and finding the door moved. It isn’t that she’s gone. It’s that the path to her changed, and nobody handed you the new map.

We are so quick to read a stalled routine as a character flaw. I’ve lost my discipline. I’ve lost my spark. Maybe I was never really a writer. The hustle culture out there is more than happy to agree with you — to tell you that real writers write every day at dawn, no excuses, and if you can’t, well…

Subscribe now

But a routine that no longer fits is not a verdict on your worth or your talent. It’s data. It’s your creative self quietly holding up the old shoes and saying, these don’t fit me anymore. Can we please get some that do?

That’s not failure, love. That’s a fitting.

And here’s where it gets genuinely interesting — interesting enough that we’ll spend the whole next letter on it:

A good routine is not the enemy of creativity.

I know the romantic myth says otherwise. The myth says creativity is a lightning bolt, a muse, a wild untamed thing that structure would only cage. But the truth is closer to the opposite. The right routine is the thing that frees you up to be creative at all — and there’s real science behind why. (More on that next time. I promise it’s the good kind of nerdy.)

The catch is this: you can’t think your way into the right routine. And you absolutely cannot shame your way into it. You have to rebuild it — gently, the way a patient scientist would. One small experiment at a time. Change a single variable, see how it feels, keep what works, release what doesn’t. No overhaul. No burning your life down to build a “perfect” system you’ll abandon in nine days. Just small, kind, repeatable tests, until the shoes fit again.

That’s what this little series is about. Over the next few letters, we’ll walk it together:

Why routine and creativity are secret allies, not enemies — and the science that backs it up.

How to run gentle “one-variable” experiments to find the rhythm that fits the writer you actually are now.

And how to keep that routine alive once you’ve found it, without white-knuckling it.

No hustle. No 5am gospel. No shoes that don’t fit. Just a sustainable, soul-honoring way back to the page.

For today, your assignment is the gentlest one I’ll ever give you: stop treating the old routine’s failure as your own.

Set the old shoes down by the door. You haven’t lost a thing. You’ve grown — and growth has always meant the old fit must be remade. That’s not loss. That’s the most ordinary, hopeful thing in the world.

Next time, we’ll talk about why structure and spontaneity are on the same team.

For now — be gentle with the writer you’re becoming. She’s worth a pair of shoes that actually fit. 🐻

With warmth (and a fresh cup of something),
Stacy
aka Mojo Mama Bear 💜
