That’s probably not you. It’s certainly not me. 🤪🐻

Real writing lives happen inside real, messy, chaotic, beautiful lives — lives with day jobs and flare-ups and grief and joy and overflowing inboxes and cats staging coups on the keyboard. (Ask me how I know. 🐈⌨️)

Your writing isn’t separate from that life. It’s part of it — one thread in the one big, wild life each of us gets.

So, over the next several weeks, we’re going to build — together — a framework for a writing life that fits your actual life.

I’m not a guru, and I won’t pretend to be one — I’m the Anti-Guru. 🤣 I’m a fully-flawed, actively-healing, life-survivalist who’s learned most of this the hard way. 🖊️ Part 1: For the Writers

The Ace of Wands is not a card of finished things. There’s no castle here. No completed manuscript, no launched book, no tidy little bow. There’s a small bear on a rocky hillside, wrapped in a twilight-purple robe, sitting in that liminal seam where the sky runs from starlit indigo on one side to molten sunset gold on the other. One paw is flung up toward the heavens. The other lifts a single slender stalk — and from the tip of it bursts a galaxy: magenta light, golden sparks, a scatter of glowing blossoms flung across the whole sky like the night just decided to bloom.

That’s the Ace of Wands. Not the harvest. The ignition. The moment before. The match, struck.

And here’s what the Ace knows about the creative life, hon:

Writers are extraordinary at dismissing the spark.

We’re so trained to be practical — to protect our time, to not chase shiny things, to “stay focused” — that when an idea drifts back into our thoughts for no logical reason, we wave it off. There’s no reason for this to be coming back. I don’t have time for this. I have other priorities. This isn’t on the plan.

But the Ace of Wands lifts that little stalk and says, very gently: the spark itself is the message.

An idea that keeps tapping your shoulder is not noise. It’s not procrastination wearing a clever disguise. It’s a living thing that has decided, for reasons it isn’t obligated to explain to you, that it’s ready to be carried. And the worst thing you can do with a returning spark is the thing we’re all so tempted to do — either dismiss it entirely, or feel like you have to drop everything and build the entire cathedral by Friday.

The Ace asks for neither.

You don’t have to build the fire today. You just have to catch the match.

That’s the whole assignment. Not “execute the idea.” Not “abandon your real work for the new shiny thing.” Just: catch it. Notice it. Name it. Set it somewhere safe so it stops costing you mental rent.

Because a spark you’ve caught is a spark you can choose to tend later, on a day when your hands are free. But a spark you keep waving off will just keep tapping — louder and louder — until you finally listen.

• What idea has been tapping your shoulder lately for no logical reason?

• What would it feel like to simply catch it — without committing to building it today?

• Where have you been mistaking “I have to act on this NOW” for “this is worth noticing”?

The bear isn’t holding a finished bouquet. She’s holding the instant of bloom. That’s enough. That’s the gift.

🌿 Today’s Practical Magick

The next time an idea sparks — the line, the scene, the “wouldn’t it be wild if,” the thing that won’t leave you alone — don’t chase it and don’t dismiss it.

Catch it.

One note. One voice memo. One scrawl on the nearest scrap. Write it down in a single sentence, then say quietly: Caught. I’ll tend you when it’s time.

And then — because we’re under a New Moon today, the dark fertile soil of the whole lunar cycle — set it in the ground. If you’ve a bay leaf in the kitchen, write your spark on it and burn it safely in a candle flame: fire and soil, married in one small gesture. If not, a single lit candle and one slow breath will do it just fine.

That’s the spell. Name the spark. Set it in the dark. Trust the soil. 🔥🌑🐾
